Non-sleepers of Lemmy, RIP.
No.
Yes, but rarely can I figure out how to use it. Whether it’s a text, email, or web site I want to look at, the keys don’t work the way they are supposed to or the keys themselves do not make sense.
Same. I’ve read that this is because that part of your brain isn’t functioning or something. I have no source. Just “I think I heard this once.”
I think it’s because dreams are “run” by the part of the brain that evolved in nature, and doesn’t access the parts of the brain we use to access much of anything we’ve invented.
That sounds like trying to use your phone on acid
This reminds me of another factoid - most people never write in their dreams. I wonder if there is a relationship.
That’s how I make sure I’m dreaming - I look for anything written. Written words in dreams are always changing and illegible.
I have read many things just fine in my dreams, never had a cell phone though.
I occasionally have/had dreams about writing tests. There’s almost always a problem with both being able to read the question and being able to write the answer! Lol
So, back when I worked in a Verizon store, I dealt with a lot of damaged phones. Any time there’s water in a dream, I always check my phone to see if it’s water damaged. Other than that, it never really gets used.
I couldn’t ever recall having a dream where I had a cell phone. Hell, I don’t think I communicated with anyone in those dreams outside of literally conversating face to face.
Sometimes , but there are pop-up ads, and weird apps running, that prevent me from using it. Or I can’t switch from the app currently running to the app I want. For some reason, when I have my phone in my dreams, these are common themes.
I don’t remember actually making phone calls in my dreams.

Yep. I have on several occasions had dreams about my phone having been taken over by malware or similar, the homescreen being changed to be full of junk apps, and being unable to uninstall them or take back control of the phone. Not pleasant at all.
Depends on the dream. Usually when I have a lucid dream, it’s mundane as fuck and just feels like being awake and I might talk on the phone or dream about memes. The wild, fun dreams don’t have anything like that.
I had a nightmare one time when I was video calling my family from my phone who were on a plane that was falling out of the sky… since then I started checking flightradar once or twice whenever they go on flights.
I don’t remember where I heard it, but I do remember hearing that one of the signs you’re in a dream is that your phone doesn’t work properly. Which leads me into this dream I had recently:
I was asleep, when my phone wakes me up. I don’t remember it actually ringing, just thinking “someone is trying to call me,” so I answer it and do my best to pretend I wasn’t just sleeping. We don’t have an actual conversation, like no words are exchanged, but through the inscrutable logic of dreams I ascertain that the caller is an old acquaintance setting me up for a job interview. We hang up and I go back to sleep.
Next thing I know I’m at the mall wondering if this was where my interview was supposed to be. I try to think back on the conversation but I don’t remember anything other than being really sleepy. For a moment I suspect that I must have imagined the conversation, maybe it was all just a dream. I don’t remember who I’m supposed to meet, where I’m supposed to meet them, or what job I’m supposed to be interviewing for. Then I reason that I wouldn’t have come to the mall unless I was supposed to, so I decide to fake it til I make it.
Sure enough, I find my old acquaintance who introduces me to someone I’ve never met about the job. We start chatting for a bit, and then the job interview turns into a scavenger hunt and I’m sent off into the mall with my prospective employer’s shopping list. I wake up before I find out if I got the job.
That fucker never works! Sometimes I conclude it’s malware but usually I just try and try and try. UI is messed up. Fingers don’t do what I want. Screen is broken. Drives me mad!

It’s one of the “reality tests” of lucid dreamers. You make a mental note of how you know your phone to behave and if you discover that not to be the case then that acts as an “alarm” that you’re sleeping.
There are other tests as well. Light switches never turn on the lights. Text changes when you look away and then read it again. You can try pushing your hand thru the wall. If you jump you’ll jump really high or may even start flying.
The point of these tests is to do them daily even when you “know” you’re awake so that the habit carries over to the dream world. However when this eventually happens either of two things is the most likely to happen: you freak out and wake up or you rationalize it to youself somehow. For example: “Holy shit I’m flying, this is a dream! Oh never mind it was just a crane that’s lifting me” Speaking from experience.
Also a word of caution. It’s not recommended to look into mirrors when you’re lucid dreaming. You’ll see something other than yourself and this can be really uncomfortable. Also if you realize you’re dreaming and start to freak out but don’t wake up there’s a good chance it turns into a nightmare. The way out of it is to not be afraid, for example go hug the monster instead of running away but this is easier said than done.
The only time that I remember dreaming with my phone, I was trying to turn it off, while its real life counterpart rung furiously.
I’ve dreamt some times with my desktop though. Such as:
- my cat pulling out the mouse from my computer, sitting in its place on the mousepad, and then meowing loudly (she does this a lot when she’s play-hunting)
- throwing potatoes on the screen, so I could get some French fries in return
- keyboard gardening: the keys were subbed with small pots full of dirt, some with small versions of plants. A lot of them were pepper plants and I was trying to cross-breed them.
Thats interesting, If I really think about it I never have dreamt about technology at all.
I’ve never had a cell phone in a dream but I’ve dreamed about other pieces of technology like video games. Though in my dreams if I interact with something like a video game there is no abstract medium like a peripheral and screen through which I’m interacting, it’s like I’m transported into the game whether it is first person or third person.
