I enjoyed the first one very much, but the second installation is not a top-down shooter anymore.
Does anyone have thoughts on this game?
Yeah it fucking rules. I was a huge fan of the first and the way this translates everything great into third person and improves basically every system in the game is amazing.
Nice. I’ll get it while the playerbase is inexperienced then. I was worried that the game was going to lose its charm when the top-down approach was abandoned but I’m glad that it’s still good.
Sounds a lot like Risk of Rain 2
I was playing with a friend who was a fan of RoR games and he made the same comparison.
no but it looked pretty fun! Some of the reviews mentioned “obscene monetization” though so i figured i’d wait for more opinions.
The monetization isn’t that bad (yet, they could change it to be very abusive), it has the usual premium currency and items at different, inconvenient totals. Most scummy thing is that the premium shop has timers on everything (gotta cause that fomo), also premium only items which have stats
Premium currency can be earned through in game, so far the rate seems reasonable, the free battle pass has some and there are some on every map
Edit: two similar games for reference:
Darktide : premium currency, odd rates, timer on premium shop, no way to earn premium currency
PlanetSide 2 (originally made by Sony Online) : premium currency, odd rates, premium can buy any item in the game which normally has a very slow grind, also xp & resource boosts
Yeah, it did seem that the desciption felt a little exaggerated, so I wasn’t gonna count the game off at all, but I’ve been burned before so I figured I could wait a couple weeks. I really want to pick this up so I almost definitely will within the next month.
I wish darktide didn’t have such shit monetization, it could’ve easily been the best 40k game otherwise
The monetization seems to be entirely for cosmetics, that are all just black with different trims.
If its entirely cosmetics, whatever, that’s just how things work these days. The reviews i saw seemed to imply they’d give an advantage even as far as saying they’re “pay to win” but that seemed like it was pretty much made for the youtube algorithm so i didn’t take it to heart.
OK, turns out I was wrong, there’s a set of weapons that can only be unlocked with premium currency too.
Yeah but you get the premium curreny by playing the game and doing missions. At least at the moment the requirements are pretty doable. I have played a bit over 4h and I have 250 of the 1000 required to unlock the premium warbond (which is also not time gated so you can take your time). Plus at least at the moment the weapons in the premium section are sidegrades at best and not straight upgrades over the weapons you get in the “free” warbond. Like even after I unlocked the premium warbonds im gonna invest in the “free” warbond first since the free weapons are more interesting.
It’s really good so far. I enjoyed the first one a lot back in the day, but Helldivers 2 surpasses it in my humble opinion. I was worried about the games progression system but it feels pretty good. You unlock stuff at a pretty steady rate just by playing. (There is stuff you can buy but everything in the game can be unlocked via playing). If you like Helldivers 1 or Deep Rock Galactic there is a good shot you will like this. Also it plays quite nice with randoms…you can ping stuff on the map or enemies and thats mostly enough.
No M2016 constitution for me to bring liberty to the Xenos, 0/10
For real though 4 hours played, very good 9/10. 1 point off because no vehicle strategems
We do know the Mech is coming soon. So I hope they will add all the vehicles like tanks, bikes and apcs from the first game.
Neat, I did not follow any announcements or dev diaries, only learned about it like a week ago
I hope they add the paragon back in, I miss my baby
I feel like I’d prefer a TPS to the first one, which didn’t really grab me. Is there any single player content for this, or is it all online? I uhh…don’t really do multi-player. Like, at all.
It’s a purely multiplayer game. You can solo missions, but honestly, that’s less fun (and some missions are probably almost impossible solo due to them being much harder than in teams). You don’t need to communicate much with others though; just pinging stuff via the map is probably okay for most of the difficulties (there are 9 of them). I would say it’s best with real people, though my games with randoms have been fun as well.
Thanks! I’ll probably pass on it then.
i watched a friend play it for a couple minutes and my main takeaway was that the modeling work was not great. the capes in particular behave in a very silly way. they’re fucking billowing even when you’re standing on the bridge of a ship
that’s hilarious and seems weirdly appropriate for the kind of vibe the games have tbh
I’m doing my part!
someone lmk if the game has camera side switching for aiming, all the footage i’ve seen looks like fortnite camera only which i hate. if its not like a cover based TPS i just don’t get the over-the-shoulder camera, i’d much rather have a centered TPS camera in a more mobile fast paced arena shooter type game, but if you are going for the over the shoulder view you HAVE to let me change the side the camera is on so i can see and navigate conveniently
You can toggle between tps and fps aiming. You’ll still be in their person when running around.
I’m waiting to see if they drop game guard for something less intrusive like EAC
