One of the things I miss about the friend who won’t talk to me anymore was how they would show me stuff they liked on YouTube. One of the last times we hung out we watched these short videos by this guy, can’t recall his name, who would talk about obscure food-related facts, like how the color coding on the bread clip things work.
I only have two channels that I really give a fuck about currently, Nexpo and Chemdelic. It’s hard for me to list off ‘things I’m interested in’, so either extrapolate from there, or just run shit by me.
One thing I can say though is I hate how extremely out of the loop I’ve become. Not just in regard to politics but media and other shit too.
Also doesn’t have to be channel recommendations. Just like, stuff you think I might like.
Boy Boy and I Did a Thing
We need boyboy emotes :alex-kissing-aleksa:
Explosions&Fire, a Australian dude does chemistry stuff
HowNot2, Couple of Cali dudes who discuss mountain climbing related stuff.
Electroboom, A guy from Canadia who makes electronic stuff.
Steve Wallis, a guy who goes camping in places you dont normally camp in.
saveitforparts, a nerd does RF related stuff
ThisOldTony, a guy who makes things, and fixes things,
Technology Connections, a guy who nerds out on tech and how things actually work.
Fran Blanche - Fran lives inSan FranPhilly and makes cool electronic gadgets n stuff.
NurdRage - Chemistry dork does chemisty stuff. This is a good list, I love Steve Wallis and that guy has a had a rough life
I really enjoy watching him stealth camp. Its good to see he’s finding his way again after his SO passed away. Stuff like that has a way of breaking people.
W Electroboom, safest unsafe electrician
seconding most of these esp technology connections and camping wth steve
fran was in philly last I checked tho. she’s kinda boomer but still undeniably endearing when she’s in her lane
It very well vould be Philly. Now that you mention it, its higly likey that im just wrong.
yah she’s east coast because she started out making guitar pedals out of brooklyn but then got priced out hard and moved to philly (where she’s not been priced out yet but… well it might happen eventually)
Adding Hyperspace Pirate for a mix of electronics, chemistry, and mechanical projects and other things, without getting too expensive
the automated hydrogen generator was the only one I’ve seen from that channel and it scared me… in a good way
edit: lmao this dweeb thinks havana syndrome is real? solid stuff
Brian David Gilbert, he does high effort absurdist skits
I like Venjent and LittleVMills if we are talking music channels. Also First thought and Second Thought if you dont know them for leftist stuff and news.
F.D Signifier is a great black content creator. If you are looking for memes I really like Gianni Matragrano and VoiceQuills (VoiceQuills is trans)
If you want something specific im sure hexbear could find you what you are looking for.
Clickspring, beautiful clockmaking machining, currently in the multi year process of making an antikythera mechanism with period accurate tools
Strange Aeons, excellent histories of meaningless internet garbage
acollierastro, great rambling physics explanations and commentary on academia
biz, extremely long rambles about film and literature
Mother’s Basement, good non-chud anime takes
mothers basement does some good stuff but also calls everything he likes the best thing ever and is way too charitable towards stuff like mushoku tensei. still would generally recommend if you want an anime youtuber, but worth noting the caveats
Seconding Mother’s Basement
Chinese Cooking Demystified - chinese cooking
Food Wishes - cooking
GDF - anti-imperialism
Johnny Johnson - war
History Matters - history
Internet Shaquille is really good for food and cooking tips, he has a lot of knowledge and is good at communicating it in a concise way.
i have been watching the northernlion cine2nerdle videos
Northernlion is a rec if only for being one of the least shitty channels out there. The chill vibe and weird idiosyncrasies are the rest of the draw
I just found out about TodePond and their videos are really cool.
awww yisss
Cody’s lab - just a dude who does stuff. Science themed but very varied. He seems like a nice guy too.
Nilered
kiwami japan
Nileblue as well just for completion’s sake
If you want something more comedic, or gaming based, I’d suggest checking out Wayneradiotv/the RTVS crew. Fair warning, a bit younger (mid to late 20s, I think one is 30.) Pretty big crew, all are good friends, very much goofy and silly and always looking for a bit. Definitely not for everyone, but its junk food content I don’t have to feel bad about because they’re all genuinely good people, have at minimum decent politics, and are genuinely funny. Extremely trans and LGBT friendly , pro-Palestine, etc.
Jokes range from 9/11 being a reoccurring gag, the main streamer being “called out” for being the white cis-het of the group, being “viewer hostile” to avoid parasocial weirdos, enjoying bad AI shit, and you usual internet funnies. One streamer had to reupload a vod after it ended with a usual guest saying “All crackers should die”. They have also a weird way of being related to a lot of internet culture, like the moonbase alpha video, lots of tumblr memes, and a series which hit it big in 2020.
The only problem is I have no idea where to direct someone new to them. Its too much of a collective art piece.
All of these are on the entertainment side of things:
Scott the Woz - Nostalgia (mostly Nintendo) videogame/console related videos. Related channel Scott’s stash
Jauwn - mostly nft game dunking and some nostalgic game reviews (I think he’s expanding this)
Two Minute Papers - this channel has been going downhill recently due to the AI craze and seemingly Nvidia sponsorships, but it has had lots of cool videos about research breakthroughs in rendering/simulations that were a fun watch. Hoping it returns to form in the near future.
MachoNacho Productions - old console modding review and installation videos
Thinking Basketball - companion channel to the podcast that breaks down NBA players/teams/systems beyond the level you get in traditional sports media
The B1M - construction channel focused on megaprojects. Probably some brainworms here but I watch and go “ooh pretty that’s so cool and huge” uncritically. Seems to have fairly positive coverage of Chinese projects so maybe it doesn’t someone can check me here.
Steve1989MREInfo - MRE review channel. Watch it only for the curiosity of the MRE and throw away anything else you hear from the former military guy
Beyond the Brick - Lego showcase channel for events/competitions around the world
Brickcrafts - more giant Lego builds mostly in a single town
CGMeetup - collection of short 3D animated works across a wide variety of contests/one-offs
Habie147 - VR games review/showcase channel from seemingly a leftist?
Steve1989MREInfo - MRE review channel. Watch it only for the curiosity of the MRE and throw away anything else you hear from the former military guy
I’ve never seen him talk about anything but the MRE and I watched a few dozen of his videos
That was just kinda a catch-all warning. Anyone who is ex-us-military who isn’t screaming from the rooftops about how they’re eternally sorry for what they’ve done with a complete condemnation of the United States just feels like they should come with a warning.
oh true
My only problem with Nexpo is I feel like he does a lot of “China bad” videos and makes me feel icky sometimes. I was curious if other people had the same experience.
I haven’t noticed this. Are you maybe getting him mixed up with Lazy Masquerade?
Yes, it’s the wrong person, I am mixing him up with Nick Crowley. I’m sorry. I think I have seen a few Lazy Masquerade videos, as well. Do they do that?
I might be mixing him up with Nick Crowley.
That’s funny. Yeah it’s definitely more than a few videos where it’s like yeah the video you are showing is objectively fucked up, but the analysis always seems to come back to the evil Chinese government, or the CCP or unsubstantiated Radio Free Asia or Falun Gong rumors.
Ancient Americas - well-researched pre-colonial American history
Hell yeah, that channel rules
