I’ve had pho from maybe over a dozen different Vietnamese places here in the states and have gone to a bunch of peoples’ favorite pho joint because every time I mention that I don’t love pho to somebody, they insist that I just haven’t had good pho and we usually go to their favorite joint and I’ve always been a little disappointed.
I love soups, I love broth, I love noodles, I love different types of food from different cultures from all over the world. I don’t think pho is that good.
I’ll take a mediocre bowl of ramen over a “good” bowl of pho any day. Miss me with that branch of basil and a giant bowl of broth.
I have yet to try it but I’ve seen what’s on offer around here and it just looks like bland soup. I mean, the broth is clear like straight water. That’s not good pho is it?
I can definitely understand this as it was my opinion until I had a great bowl of pho. Any “good” bowl of pho is just as good as a bad bowl, but a great bowl is one of the most comforting noodle bowls IMO.
Also, I think pho with expectations going in is probably gonna disappoint. I started searching for good pho on my own before I really had an interest in ramen. Whenever I was taken to ramen shops on a recommendation I was mildly disappointed. Had some great ramen when I had no expectations at a place I went to on a whim.
Last thought, the toppings for pho go with my palate better than ramen toppings. So, my unpopular opinion is pho toppings are better than ramen toppings and fish cake is not good. 😅
Funny. I have one place that I like to get Pho at, but I’ve been disappointed everywhere else.
Maybe you just haven’t found your place yet.
Maybe you just haven’t found your place yet.
That’s totally 100% what that is.
This reads like someone who eats pizza 4 times a week and claims to of had “the best pizza” in their elementary school cafeteria
I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion per say, but i get it. I didn’t know what pho was the first time I tried it, and i was expecting something more ramen like. I also did not care for it… But a few months after that i found myself craving it one day… And now i love it. That being said, i can definitely see how it would be overhyped by people. It is not an especially amazing food really… But it is a food i quite enjoy, especially in the winter. Props to you for continuing to try it.
For me, the draw is as much the way I feel after eating it as the eating part–it feels wholesome. So I get that it’s not amazing for everyone, but I still love it.
It is a great comfort food, and i don’t believe it is terrible for you either. I just got back from meeting a friend for lunch at a pho place. He had never had it before and enjoyed it thoroughly!
