Anyone else watch the new Ghibli movie and want the knife?

@edc

Studio Ghibli’s new movie, The Boy and the Heron, prominently places quite a few traditional Japanese knives, including kitchen knives, a sword, and the boy’s pocket knife, a Higonokami. They’re a carbon steel friction folder. I just thought it was a vibe seeing it in the movie.

If you want to buy one, fuck Amazon and Chinese copies, go directly to the source!
Edit: higonokami-knife.com may be less legit than others. See comment

    @edc btw, I realize this post might have a little advertising smell. but yeah obviously to be clear that’s not the case. I just know it’s a knife a lot of people appreciate, and would also be annoyed if people bought a Japanese knife made in China by companies that don’t even have the right to use the name

    $31 for this knife SCREAMS that it is also made in China and being sold with a bullshit story to sell it to chumps who believe it.

    • @w2tpmf The translation is atrocious for sure. At least it explains the company they claim it comes from. I have heard this site recommended on r/EDC before as legitimate, but it looks like there are sounder options out there, so look there instead!

      I’ll edit my post

    Haven’t seen the movie but I’m in the market for a pocket knife, and that looks as cool as anything I’ve ever seen. I’m sold but all of my credit cards ran out of my wallet to hide when I opened the website.

    Edit: Got it anyway. Card didn’t remove themselves from PayPal :) I didn’t think there was any chance they were going to Use PayPal, even if they did, I would have assumed it would have to be done as a “gift to a friend”. I’ll be opening packages in major style for the rest of my life ✌️ And I gotta see this movie, I stopped looking for Hayao Miyazaki films a long time ago, I didn’t hear about this one. Or maybe I did, didn’t realize who was behind it and assumed it was just another Netflix anime. Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle were 2 of my favorite movies. I could have sworn I was a kid when I first saw them but, now that I see the IMDB, they were just early 2000’s. I was in my 20’s :)

      When you watch Mononoke Hime, be sure to find a fansub for the original Japanese audio. Miramax (aka Disney) censored the giving of the knife pendant scene for no reason other than puritanical BS, and thereby gutted its reappearance in the third act. 🤌🏼

    I see you updated the post to say that site might not be quite legit. I got mine today and visibly, it’s as advertised, however I have no clue how to authenticate any other claims they’ve made, such as the source and exactly what it’s made out of. Any ideas what I could look at to verify?

    Either way, I’m happy with what I got for the price even if the story is bullshit. I was able to use PayPal properly (no “gift to a friend” bs I’ve seen on other scammy sites). The price on the site is the price, no additional shipping cost (it did ship from Japan), no tax (that might be a bit sus). It got here in 2 weeks, and it’s as sharp as a thing can be as far as I’m concerned. My only complaint is it’s really stiff out of the box (I was afraid I was going to slip and cut myself trying to open it) but after watching a few videos talking about them, I think that might be by design as they seem to be applying about the same amount of force I am. Also, I’ve never had a knife that opens like this so it’s probably mostly just my fear of the unknown, and I’m already getting used to it.

    i already had higonokamis and i watched that boring movie some weeks ago.

    not all higonokamis are carbon steel. I just bought a 7cr18mov as a gift and i think it’s considered stainless

    they are simple and likeable but they’re not practical at all.

    blue steel / bronze version is my desk knife and i carried a smaller one from time to time.

    You can’t eat with them, they’re thick. I would choose an opinel any day over a higonokami
