It’s a turban squash and is probably something like 10" wide. I tried cutting it into cubes and peeling, which I should know is futile with most squash but gat damn the skin is THICKKKKKK. So I gave up and am roasting because it would probably take me 2 hours to do it the hard way.

Gonna put it in some Thai curry with spinach, Tofu, and avocado.

It’s turban squash! It is weird as hell lol. Never eaten it before so hoping it’s not too bland. Gourds ARE cool, I used to work at a cool organic grocery and we would carry soooo many varieties I’d never seen before. My all time fave is Red Kuri squash!

That’s awesome that your harvest turned out! I’ve been neglecting my garden bed but maybe I’ll get out there for spring

So cool, it looks like something off a randomly generated planet in a space video game.

How did it turn out in the end? Are these things tasty?

It being alien food is exactly why we bought it lol.

It was a fucking PAIN IN THE ASS to cut and peel before cooking, I got maybe 1/5th done if even that in like 20 minutes lol. So I roasted it halved and that obviously helped.

As far as taste, I’m already not a huge fan of squash so to me it was just bland and…not very good? Idk what to compare it to, not sweet really and has this characteristic squash taste that I just cant describe that typically turns me off. My favorite is Red Kuri squash. I also like sweeter pumpkins and I like either butternut or acorn but not both lol. So yeah wouldn’t recommend, was an experiment though

I used to work at a farmer’s market and we always sold a ton of weird-ass gourds in the fall. Never eaten a turban squash before. What did it taste like?

Very bland imo, not sweet at all. Had the normal squash taste which I don’t know how to describe…not bitter but…? Wouldn’t suggest.

For some weird ass gourds that are tasty as hell I’d try Red Kuri squash and futsu squash if you come across it. I love working with organic produce, if it paid well enough I probably would’ve stayed working in my produce department forever

I think we used to sell futsu squash, or at least some that were very similar looking. Definitely had several with bumpy skin like that one, but I seem to remember some of them having the “gray” tone mentioned on the Wikipedia page. Had no idea they were a delicacy. Never heard of the red kuri ones before, and didn’t recognize them. I’ll have to give both a try; thanks for the suggestions!
