The way he’s talking, it sounds like he doesn’t know it’s a puppet.
He knows. That’s how fragile he is.
Apparently that’s legit a problem when a character like Elmo or Kermit shows up in real world interviews, Muppeteer disappears into the role so well the person they’re talking to will seemingly forget, mic up the puppet, etc.
