Similar to how Mastodon offers an open source, distributed version of X, the fediverse is getting its own TikTok competitor. This week, an app called Loops began accepting signups on its new platform for sharing short, looping videos. Still in the early stages, Loops is not yet open sourced, nor has it completed its integration with ActivityPub, the protocol that powers Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and other federated apps.

Remember when Twitter came out with Vine and then canceled it, only for TikTok to fill the void and become the powerhouse it is today? Another brilliant move by Jack Dorsey!

I’m not very familiar with TikTok, but isn’t the special thing about it it’s addictive algorithm? As far as I understand TikTok is not “just a platform for sharing short videos”.

I mean this project sounds great and I am excited to see how it goes, but is it smart to advertise it as the “TikTok competitor”?

I don’t think they promote themselves as TikTok competitor, that’s just TechCrunch words.
