My bachelors thesis was basically about recommender systems like this. Netflix truly is a sunken ship.

Yeah, no I think you are spot on in that last sentence. We, as viewers, enthusiasts and consumers can only vote with our wallets. I have spent a lot more effort trying to bring people to independent showing and movies that aren’t the highest grossing/budget films.
But while that may be true, I definitely also went and saw Oppenheimer, Barbie and across the spider-verse.
But I think the whale, tar, Banshees of Inisherin, everything everywhere all at once, triangle of Sadness - all did fairly well at the movies, and despite being far from low budget indiemovies, I think that gives me a lot of confidence that cinema is alive and thriving!
When climbing started to become a televised sport, they changed the entire format to support televised timings. When they have athletes who are way taller or way shorter, the routes etter needs to take that into account for the setting for the comp.
Honestly, I think the sports and or rulesets could take a pass and see if there’s anything they can do to find a middle ground that can suit trans-athletes and cis-gendered athletes more equally.
That’s said - I’m not very competitive of me, so my opinions Wil always be biased. While I think competitions push the sports I also have seen firsthand the toxicity and negativity high level sports bring. So basically, I think inclusivity and sportsmanship is more important that integrity of the competitive nature.
While I don’t disagree on the main points of your post, I’d like to counter by saying I think we are back on the rise. We see eastern movies more frequently make it to our cinemas (at least where I live), and a decline in interest when it comes to superhero stuff. We had a Norwegian movie outsell Aquaman the past weekend and that’s wild. (I know, Aquaman isn’t at the top of people’s hype-list).
I myself also decided to make the choice to go and see more indepent films, attend screenings/festivals in my city and stop going to the marvel shows. It’s been a blast and I’m loving going to the movies more than ever as a result!
The more I play it, the more I enjoy it. Sure it has its flaws and definite issues, but they’ve also hit a perfect mid of systems to manage (food, temps, disease etc) where it makes sense and it’s not too overbearing. They’ve also included a hefty amount of welcome QoL changes.
Still, I can’t craft bulk cloth at once etc and some of those things irk me. The procedural (?) generation is a bit repetitive and mob spawns are a complete mess
Been playing Return to Moria with a friend and we’re having a blast! Got to do a few games of The Finals playtest and that was great fun.
Also got to test a few games of CS2 and actually enjoyed that more than expected as well.
Yeah that would be my tip. Once the seasons end in these games, they are transferred over to become non-seasonal characers so nothing is lost.
But that can be a solution for the next one! d3 is such a fun game
This is Wes Anderson in top for, it’s a really fun watch!
It might not stay with the quaint forever.
However I had a lot of fun reading the “Mage Errant” books! It’s a progression Fantasy (comparable genre with shounen anime) that follows a group of students at a magic school as they grow into their powers as they attempt to become strong magic wielders.
I find the book to not only not be bigoted, but be delightfully inclusive in so many aspects, it also includes characters dealing with trauma in a positive way.
I blazed through this 7 book series like popcorn.
Other than that, there are many good suggestions here!
I changed my reddit link to lemmy but kept the snoo symbol.
I don’t really visit too much, I will sweep by a few times a week or so. Reddit I only go to when Google takes me there, which is often enough thst I had to install the official turd of an app.
But I do t have a user over there anymore, so I am not logged in.
There’s a “spinoff” of the skyward series written by a female author! But having really both that trilogy and skyward I’d say chest GPT is off. But it definitely is closer to skyward flight (the spinoff)
There’s a whole bunch of fillers each time they remotely catch up to the Manga and several “guides” about which ones to skip etc. It’s not too hawrd to catch up if you make it a consistent low-time commitment like watching half an ep on the pooper
I ordered parts and built my own, super fun hobby! The custom keyboard scene is very fun
I agree about the quests feeling fairly good, but my hod is the jour Al itself atrocious. No way to remove/hide quests from the map. Many quests sort of remain in this “not done” quest state because completing it will have undesirable outcomes and it feels weird that I have to keep it there still
Purely based on population I’m an exceptional climbing instructor.
Do you mean so it was balanced around encounters instead of rests? If so, yes please
I love OptimumTech. Mostly focused on SFF builds and peripherals and setup-minimalism. However Ali has a very relaxing voice and entirely drama free
It’s not widely available and its only in Norwegian, sadly.
However, I will second @mkengine proposal for Letterboxd, I think it is the superior site to nerd out on. Discovery can be a challenge, depending on your own level of investment into the medium. I’m a big ol movie-nerd, and I’m currently grateful to have access to most streaming services through friends/family/partner so I get to browse them if desired.
Apart from that my twitter algorithm is quite skewed towards movies, and I have a “list” on there (curated users you can browse, kind of like a community on here. That’s been great.
Other than that, I listed to podcast, sometimes check out our national newspapers reviews (but most of those reviewers are already in the aforementioned twitter-list) etc.
As for reading on recommender systems and the algorithm for netflix. My work was based around bias and “trust” when it comes to the recommender systems and how much it recommended/pushed “its own agenda” to users despite having differential tastes.
Good keywords I enjoyed was: recommender system bias I also read some good articles on the spotify recommender systems. But those mostly centered around people growing attached to their algorhitms. It was a fun read.
