  • Hospitality is this for me, and has been for the last 18~ years.

Really you have a good hour of power where the bulk of customers will want to eat, drink and have a good time - all at once because fuck the kitchen and the bar.

Having to relay information from the kitchen, make sure the bar hasn’t lost a docket, dealing with spills, intoxicated patrons, wait people missing a meal / adding the wrong meal to an order plus the general meeting and greeting of walk-ins / bookings.

It’s also managing wages - when to knock people off, who to send home early, who costs more, who is unwell or le’ tired. Who can’t work together, who is bad at pack down or requires micromanagement once the busy period is over.

It’s a never ending list of monitoring, putting out fires, managing expectations of patrons and staff - all the while being legitimately nice and keeping your cool.

Oh, and if something gets missed you’ve just put the next days crew in a bad spot. Didn’t prep that aquafaba? Forgot to swap a postmix bag, change a gas bottle, polish cutlery, clear tables or even check the fucking toilets for passed-out patrons?

Rinse and repeat 5+ days a week. And this isn’t including how to manage personal relationships, hobbies and general self-care when everyone else is working a 9-5.

At least I’m not bald or grey yet.

  • Mount the partition in Linux and migrate it all?

I personally thought I’d miss parts of windows, but the consistent bombardment of bing search results when I wanted to search my computer for a filename, application or just fucking anything drove me to curbstomp all my windows installs.

That and the ever changing settings menus, having to delve through shit sandwiches to end up in an antiquated but familiar window to change a setting was a fucking nightmare.

Honestly, if there was a bit more KISS happening within windows I’d probably have not moved OS - but Microsoft’s never ending desire to change what really worked for so many years drove me to where I am.

You do you, I’m not here to convince anyone to migrate OS, but having some level of semblance and control - for me is such a relief. Probably some of the ASD + ADHD coming through but I’m sure there are many typical folks that feel the same way.

Is Orca that resource intensive? I’m running it in a container with KasmVNC and have never really checked out the resource usage. Admittedly it’s on one of my local servers in another room. I guess it’s how large your projects are too.

Edit: maybe it’s just my small projects

  • Might not be what you had in mind, but NixOS “kind-of” ticks all your boxes.

For me NixOS is a build your own distro more so than Arch could ever be.

My config covers antiquated meme worthy notebooks with 4gb ram, desktop with an ultra wide monitor and dedicated graphics, two headless servers running services, containers, transcoding video / cctv; aaand my daily driver laptop.

As far as 2nd hand laptop are concerned - it’s very location specific. My neck of the woods it’s buy online or hope some locally has marked something at a reasonable price.
