  • Because basically everything in the Democratic Party is fundraising and seniority now and he represents NY and has for years. The way you advance within the Democratic Party is fundraising. So, leadership almost inevitably represents NYC, San Francisco, LA, etc. If you can have a fundraiser with guests from Hollywood, Wall Street, or Silicon Valley, it’s pretty easy to be one of the top Democratic fundraisers.

The only other ways to match that are basically: be independently wealthy, have an unusual level of celebrity and a national profile (like AOC), or be the chair of the appropriations or finance committee or something similarly powerful. There’s no official rule about it but traditionally, Democrats assign committee positions by seniority. So, you get a bunch of out-of-touch old people running powerful committees and easy-to-caricature coastal elites as the main faces of the party in Congress. (Republicans have 6-year term limits for committee leadership and fewer norms around seniority.)

Republicans obviously don’t have fundraising issues since the FEC doesn’t enforce election laws and they have billionaires on their side. Super PACs legally aren’t allowed to coordinate with the campaigns but, of course, Elon Musk, who setup and funded the biggest Super PAC, literally made campaign appearances with Trump and crashed at Mar-a-Lago for awhile. Of course they fucking coordinated.

  • Egg prices aren’t high solely because of bird flu. They’re high because of regional monopolies and a price fixing cartel. The largest egg producers are seeing record profits.

I hope it’s clear that I’m not saying bird flu doesn’t exist or affect prices. I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist. But if I had to guess, I’d say it’s 10% bird flu and 90% companies raising prices in unison because they can blame bird flu. If it were just bird flu, the companies would be losing money.

NB: it feels very weird to call them “egg producers” because hens are the actual egg producers. Egg distributors, maybe? In any case, the distributors are doing fine and their only competition in most regions are small, organic farms whose eggs were already $7 a dozen. It’s just the low end of the market that’s gone crazy.

  • I might be the poster child for medicinal use. I never really enjoyed getting high and I’ve gone to many Dead and Company and Widespread shows. So, I’m not an amateur or in favor of restricting drugs but I normally just say “No thanks.” when I’m the rotation. Most strains make me itchy or tired and antisocial. Everyone’s brain chemistry is different. For me, I either had fun or (more often) just felt miserable.

When I developed an anxiety disorder, I tried everything else. And some pharmaceutical pills do work but it takes like 30 minutes for a pill to work. But I found a strain and dose that works in 2 or 3 minutes. I’m not saying everyone will have the same experience but it should be legal everywhere. People who don’t even smoke recreationally testify that it’s got fewer negative side effects and helps. If it were a novel drug, it’d easily get FDA clearance.

  • A lot has gone backwards since then but at least cannabis is legal in most places (even if only medicinally). I have a prescription and being able to know the strain and dose is actually really important.

I just have random anxiety attacks and a small-to-medium dose of Granddaddy Purp works better than any traditional medicine I’ve tried. Benzos just make me sleep. I can at least function with the right dose and strain and I can be certain about it buying from a dispensary. And my case is minor. It’s way more important for people with stomach cancer or whatever who have no appetite. The right dose and strain makes them hungry and happy. I don’t think there’s an equivalent pharmaceutical. Every state/country should make medicinal marijuana legal. Otherwise, people buy it off a dealer and can’t measure the dose or know the strain.
