  • i also noticed a recent sync in-congruence from .ml to .world which indicates some kind of funny business… purposeful or not

This isn’t unique to world or ml. There’s some wonky shit going on with federating across Lemmy at the very least, maybe other parts of the fediverse that I don’t use. On walledgarden there are at least half a dozen instances that are falling in and out of sync with our communities. No one on either side of the connection seems to have an answer for what caused this behavior or how to correct it. Talking to some other instances, we aren’t alone.

The lemmyverse crawler/site has also shown some odd behavior with communities and instances disappearing and reappearing seemingly at random.

I don’t think anything malicious is being done by any of the instances or admins in regards to federation delays.

    1. Retooling some grow spaces.

I decided I need more vertical space in some of my racks which means moving things around. Not the most complicated project but it’s something I have to plan out before starting so I don’t end up moving and removing things a million times. It’s also a good opportunity to do some deep cleaning that I don’t reeeeeeeally feel like doing.

    1. Continuing backyard renovations.

Last week was clearing brush and burning shrubs, this week is moving around stuff that isn’t too heavy or awkward so the dogs have more space to run and play. I’m also covering some low areas that are turning into mud holes with pine straw to keep it from getting worse. Maybe some grass will sprout up through it in the spring.

    1. Cleaning neglected spaces around the house.

I’ve been trying to reduce the amount of dust in our home and cleaning the spots that are easy to forget or neglect. We have tons of ceiling fans that like to collect dust and I find cleaning them to be miserable on my upper body no matter what I use. I’ve tried various dusters, vacuuming, vacuum attachments, even taking the blades off and reattaching them. For some people this might be quick and easy, for me it’s a project and a chore I detest. I’m also doing things like changing filters and checking the heating system since temps have been getting low enough to make the heat a temptation.

Nothing major since I’m supposed to be taking it easy but enough that I still feel overwhelmed about it all sometimes. The colder temps make my joints feel terrible but I have to do more than sit around all day!

  • I saw your comment but I was mainly concerned with getting the instance to show up on lemmyverse at the time, which I suspected was the connection being blocked by our host (it was). Coincidentally since getting listed lemmyverse has been having its own problems so I put it on the back burner.

I’ll do some deeper digging into this and see what I can figure out. I don’t think it has anything to do with the communities falling out of sync since it’s never mattered before now and WG isn’t the sole instance being impacted, but it should work correctly either way.

  • I’m having similar issues with a number of instances. Users have reported verified federation delays between walledgarden and several other places including lemmy.ml, hexbear.net, feddit.org, vegantheoryclub.org, and possibly others. Before anyone says it- yes I know they don’t federate with everyone but walledgarden isn’t being blocked/defedded.

Walledgarden seems to be able to retrieve the data from them, but WG communities stopped federating to them a few days to a week or more ago in many cases, and as recently as yesterday in others. I’ve been working through it with our host but so far we haven’t figured it out since there isn’t anything obvious causing the problem on our side. As far as I can tell replies and interactions from walledgarden still make it to those instances without issue.

    It’s very frustrating.

  • I can tell you that one of the most intimidating things to me was/is the fragmented nature of said ‘fediverse’. Between mastodon, lemmy, the video whose name I constantly forget and the other stuff going on… it’s hard to keep track of what is what. It’s even harder with the supposed portability/compatibility between various services (I have yet to understand how I am supposed to follow a discussion on lemmy using my mastodon account and vice-versa. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fine admitting that’s a me issue but still… it doesn’t help me being more active and, to tell you the whole truth, I quit using my mastodon at all because I could not figure out out to use it hand in hand with the Lemmy one or even if it was possibility or I simply understood it wrong

I haven’t felt the need to broaden my footprint in the fediverse beyond Lemmy. You are definitely correct that the interaction of the various services could be improved. Time will tell if they grow together or further apart.

And that’s not even mentioning people like myself who also blog: can it be done inbside lemmy? Is it considered good practice or not to link back to one’s blog? Since I can’t tell, I refrain to share any link to my personal blog ;)

There are some using Lemmy itself as blogging software. It can be as simple as a community with posts restricted to moderators (you) or as much as an entire instance dedicated to a blog. The sky is really the limit and users are coming up with (I think) some use cases that even the devs didn’t see coming.
