So the mug is the best choice by far, due to its universe-breaking abilities surrounding temperature. Setup a Stirling engine on that for infinite power.

I do have to admit it’s a bit disheartening to post that pic, and then people react to it by looking how to use the objects to ‘hack’ the nature of reality.

Kind of, lol. But you can see the difference in the type of hacking. The objects are only meant to hack your own, private reality. That’s what the picture is meant to address, that aspect of our lives that can’t be translated into external and/or mechanical utility.

Besides, the issue of energy scarcity that the replies are working off could be fixed or at least minimised through realistic technological and political/economic solutions, with no need for magical objects that defy the laws of physics. But no law or real invention can be guaranteed e.g. to give you good dreams.

I mean, that magic candle single handedly gives hope for reversing universal entropy. Everything else might be personally fulfilling but that thing could be the key to preventing the heat death of the universe.

Which would be pretty personally fulfilling too imo.

mein freund, some of us prefer to focus on extracting the most material value out of these hypothetical objects, simply because we want to. it’s fun to imagine the possibilities with the infinite energy from the candle and the mug.

          material value

I think that’s the point that they’re making: it’s supposed to be about which object of immense EMOTIONAL value would make people the happiest, and then a lot of people make it about their material value in stead.

As much as I understand their disappointment, though, Lemmy of all places is so full of nerds and geeks (said with love as a geek myself) who know a lot about technical stuff that it was pretty much bound to happen…

I dont know how much energy you’d get per hour from a hot mug though. I’m much more intrigued by a blanket that would keep you safe in the arctic as well as the Sahara.

favorite mug is the best for breaking the laws of physics and generating infinite energy - though the blanket and the candle also have infinite heat, the mug would be the most versatile, as you could fill it with a super-hot liquid, then treat it like an RTG, generating electricity from the temperature difference between the mug and its environment. use the mug as your spaceship’s power supply, and you’ll never even need big honkin photovoltaic panels !

I love how this post was meant to be cozy, and the first thing you think of is breaking reality.

      I would pick the candle!

Yeah infinite energy source was my first thought as well (mug/candle). Might be able to come up with some amazing uses for the blanket as well.

With the blanket you can walk on the sun though. (Assuming that you won’t get crushed by gravity)

How does one recuperate the energy from a candle to transform it to something useful? Also, would it’s output be enough to power anything meaningful in a reasonable time anyway?

According to this a burning candle releases about 80 watts.

It could operate a Sterling engine .

Assuming most of the candle’s energy is released as heat, with light and magic making up a small percentage, and assuming a perfectly efficient engine, and a spherical cow for good measure…

You could charge your phone, or a power bank. You could power a light bulb. You could heat up water (for a flow of 2 milliliters per second, you could raise the temperature by about 10 degrees Celsius).

I will literally settle for just one quality of one of these. Give me the “perfect temperature blanket,” I don’t even care if it’s soft or the right size. If it somehow stabilized my temperature so it didn’t feel like it fluctuated 20⁰ every hour, I would sleep like a baby

If not for the “almost”, I’d have chosen the candle for sure, but as long as it’s not COMPLETELY impossible, my ADHD/anxiety combo is GOING to find something to stress about.

So yeah, I’m going to go with the treasure stone and hope people don’t get the wrong idea about me fiddling in my pocket at high pressure moments 😁

If I was a fae creature, I’d get the endless candle so I could lure people to my hut in the forest and they would not get a sense of danger at all (assuming everyone around the candle can also feel the effects by smelling it)

bear and pillow seem to have the most utility – having 100% good dreams must be incredibly blissful. but i do feel empty often as well
