It’s because they believe their only hope is to to try to grind up “status” from working out, dressing better/looking slightly better, and having money. Anything to do with not having a disgusting personality is anathema to their consumeristic worldview.

My personality is not disgusting (I swear) but I am not attractive to anyone as far as I can tell, so I don’t know what else to do.
