I liked the Direct, even though new announcement for first party were pretty much all remakes, but since Switch is my first Nintendo console, I loved all those announcements.
What do you all think about it?
Side order and mariokart be looking good. league expanding outside of their MOBA and lore expansion is cute. Probably looking to capitalism off the show. Contra looks good even if it’s not “new”. Gf texted me demanding SpyXAnya.
But Jesus there was like 3 or 4 Turn Based RPGs with medieval settings and sprite artwork. In competition with Fire Emblem how is there this many? Good for competition I guess.
These remakes (Luigi mansion 2) are great and all but it really shows that if the cartridge slot had been 3ds sized from the beginning they wouldn’t be able to sell you these games again. LM2 isn’t that old to need a remake but they EoL’d the 3ds so here we are. Pretty diverse announcement set.
Unicorn Overlord is from Vanillaware though- I’m willing to give anything coming from them a shot.
Same here. Though, I still haven’t tried 13 Sentinels, so can’t say anything about their recent games. Loved their 2D brawler / RPG ones.
Highly recommend 13 Sentinels if you’re a fan of visual novels. Simply beautiful with great music and characters. If you’re not a fan of VNs though, the RTS gameplay is so minimal that I wouldn’t bother. It’s well-designed and enjoyable but barely 10% of the runtime.
Oh, it’s on my wish list, I just have a huuuuge wishlist and a backlog, so haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I think it’s kind of a genre revival. The genre was very under represented for a long time, so probably many devs started working on such games, and then ended up releasing them all close to each other.
The Kongs are in Mario Kart again!
Unicorn Overlord looks good. Not many tactics RPGs have scratched the FF tactics itch for me (Symphony of War hits the spot but playing that on steam).
Plus we’re finally getting another Vanillaware game so it’s definitely gonna look great. Now if only they’d port Muramasa Rebirth to the Switch.
Yes please- I’m about to pull the trigger for it on Wii.
I got my Vita mostly to play the four DLC stories (that and to play the other Vanillaware games). I wonder how good it looks on PlayStation TV.
Interesting- I skipped Vita and not sure how to jump in on collecting for it due to the proprietary storage. Vita TV is only ~$150 atm though 🤔
There are third party memory card solutions out there… essentially they hijack the cart slot and allow you to stick in a standard micro SD card to use as storage.
I have two of the standard PSV memory cards (I think a 4gb one that came with my Assassin’s Creed bundle, and another 32gb one that I spent like $100 on when the finally dropped the prices into a realm that was at least within viewing distance of sanity), but being able to stick in a cheap-o micro SD card and have ALL the games I purchased (and some extras…) is pretty great.
And because I feel like I’m legally obligated to say this as a Vita owner, hacking the thing was the best decision I made outside of buying the handheld in the first place, when it comes to the PSV. It’s way easier now than when I initially wanted to try (and was too scared to do so when the handheld was still being supported), and as long as you follow up-to-date instructions you should be golden.
Right on! I have a hacked PSP with a similar memory card solution. It’d be nice to upgrade since I’ve always been a fan of the form factor.
It looks like there’s a lot of Ogre Battle in there as well.
Damn, no Metroid Prime 4 again.
The way they shadow dropped Metroid Prime 1 Remaster, I am expecting them to release all 3 Metroid Prime games before 4. So, no release of Metroid Prime 2 remaster is a bit sad. It either means they aren’t going to release remasters of a whole trilogy, or that Prime 4 is much further away than we hope.
They’re doing something with F-Zero!!! 😱
It’s a Battle Royale and it requires NSO to play which I refuse to pay for. 😐
Otherwise I was happy to see TTYD is coming back! I really have to play the original again, I haven’t since it originally released…
Yearly NSO price is super super cheap.
Weird mindset… you consider that it’s ok because it’s cheap? At what price is it not ok anymore?
It’s unacceptable to me that we have to pay for services that should be free and that we can’t own certain games because they’re locked behind a paywall.
On the other hand your could consider it paying for Fzero and just ignore the rest of the network. If that works for you then the problem is solved.
On the other hand if you are worried that you will never “own” the battle Royale game: that was never going to happen, it will die when the serves go dark no matter how they monitize. You might as well enjoy it while it lasts.
The ownership part applies to all retro games that I can’t purchase because they’re only available to NSO members, it’s not about f-zero specifically.
Oh, fair enough.
But as someone who has an NSO sub for other reasons trust me the emulation isn’t ideal. I use my lounge room PC for anything I’m going to put time into.
If I buy three game using NSO vouchers the discount total is higher than a standard NSO subscription, that’s enough for me. I buy more than three games over the year so it saves me quiet a bit.
Just jail break your ns. The free games you get will pay for the nso subscription
That’s totally besides the point and still rewards Nintendo for what I consider to be horrendous business practice towards their customers.
Was hoping to get Capt Falcon in Mario Kart to go with the Blue Falcon kart, especially since I also refuse to get a subscription, but alas. Still, it’s nice to see any new F-zero for the first time in… wow, 20 years.
Why do you refuse to pay for NSO?
Because I find it insulting to have to pay for services that are free on PC, especially when we’re talking about being able to play multiplayer games using a peer to peer connection or the ability to play some older games (amongst other things).
I feel ya, but consoles are a different beast.
Reasonable people can debate how the pricing should be structured, especially when it comes to online functionality that doesn’t even take a penny of Nintendo’s server budget…
But I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect zero cost at all, when:
- Console manufacturers have an unavoidable incentive to sell hardware at a loss (even without factoring in the platforming costs+risks) and make up for it in software sales and add-on services
- …and they suffer the reputation hit if any of their offerings are not up to par, in a way that e.g. Windows does not, so they have an unavoidable interest in monitoring and triaging issues with games
- …and networked components tend to be the most sensitive and most traceable part of any software system
- …and scaling issues tend to be a cross-cutting concern that a third-party vendor who isn’t intimately familiar with the client codebase can affordably help with
It’s just part of the deal you make when you sign up for a walled garden. You get certain guarantees, but only if you pay for the relevant package. You can’t have it both ways – getting the benefit of first-party backing while enjoying the freedom of a purely third-party environment. It’s like a cruise ship that doesn’t let you bring your own alcohol.
Windows doesn’t offer the service that connects Counter Strike players together, Valve does, and they do it for free and they offer it for first and third party games and they suffer the reputation hit if the service doesn’t work (possibly even worse because at least with consoles you potentially have a physical copy as a backup to play with, which isn’t a possibility with always online games on Steam).
Nintendo gets a cut on all software sold on their consoles, they get all profits from first party software, they don’t tend to be the manufacturer that sells at the biggest loss (if at a loss at all), but people are still defending their choice to lock basic functionalities behind a paywall…
Oh cool, Wargroove is getting a sequel. Love me some medieval fantasy Advance Wars.
Enjoying F-Zero 99 so far! Top 10 has been my best. I imagine they’ll add back more ships and tracks over the next year or so.
Another thing I just thought of- no new NSO confirmations? Where’s 1080?
F-Zero 99 is so much fun.
Spy Anya is my winner. There doesn’t need to be any plot. I just want to walk around and see/do cute things, and I will be happy.
How is SpyXFamily? I have never watched / read it.
I love it! It’s so adorable. If you want something well written with a super compelling story that makes you think, then it isn’t for you. If you want to just watch an adorable girl do cute things and laugh along as she acts like an idiot, then it’s great! The dad takes himself way too seriously, which is one of my favorite tropes. It’s just fun nonsense.
Heh, it sounds like fun. Will check it out.
Since nobody said it… trombone champ looks very silly and fun. :-D
It does!
Not really a game for me, but it does look very silly and fun.
Well then. T’was certainly a Direct; forgive me for the coming wall of text, and if said wall of text comes off as a bit negative at times.
Tragically, the additional Side Order information mostly shoots down my stupid conspiracy theory that it’s a sequel to Paper Mario Colour Splash. Though then again, we still don’t know why the “Spire of Order” is devoid of colour, so it still could be the work of the straw-wielding Shy Guys (no it can’t). Idiocy aside, the fact it’s a rougelike is really interesting to me; I honestly just expected standard, pre-set single player campaigns to be the only major offerings of Splatoon 3’s DLC, akin to such campaigns of the main games and 2’s DLC. I do generally like rougelikes and did enjoy the first two Splatoons, so reckon I’d probably like this as well, but I never bought Splatoon 3 under the pretence it didn’t change enough from 2 to justify existing on the same system, and I’m not shelling out for the game and DLC just to play the seemingly cool rougelike side mode.
I was NOT expecting Trombone Champ, of all games, to make use of the right joy-con’s IR camera - been pondering about how relatively underutilised it is lately, though it’s probably not the easiest thing to actually find a use case for. I suppose that using it as a controller fits with the insanity of Trombone Champ, though, and multiplayer looks like it’ll be absolutely stupid in the best way possible. My sister already owns the Steam version, though, so probably won’t get this one, hilarious as the Switch-specific controls look.
Considering that Mansion 3 is perhaps one of the best looking games on the Switch, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD looks profoundly manky to me. Really just looks like an upscaled version of the 3DS version, perhaps with smoother models and possibly Luigi’s model snagged from 3, but since its first reveal and furthermore now, it’s always looked more than a little manky. At least the Scarescraper’s still there, though; in spite of never beating the main story of the 3DS original, I played mountains of Scarescraper.
F-Zero 99 looks kinda cool, and given it’s free, I’ll absolutely try it out, even if my few attempts at the original F-Zero via Smash 4 Wii U’s Masterpieces and Switch Online SNES went terribly. The worry, of course, is that it’ll be as short-lived as other 99 games like Super Mario Bros. 35 and Pac-Man 99, which would be a real shame for a series as famously content-starved as F-Zero.
I mentioned the IR camera’s underutilisation earlier, and WarioWare also decided to use it for some microgames. So that’s pretty cool. Don’t particularly like Wario’s voice acting, though; probably a consequence of Martinet stepping back from the role. While what we’ve heard of Mario’s Wonder voice sounds good to me, this Wario voice… less so. Also a bit worried about how I’ll play this game at all; definitely looks like it’s best played docked, but I almost always play with the Switch in Handheld Mode, and my console misbehaves when trying to dock it (i.e: it does acknowledge it’s been docked, but doesn’t display on the dock screen). Could probably make use of my old spare Switch or my brother’s instead, though.
There are only two question mark slots on the character select screen in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so where are they going to stick the two extra characters they’ve introduced? Are they going to crush them, or some existing characters, into alternate costume slots? That aside, I do fear that given that only 4 Tour nitro tracks (ignoring the RMX courses) aren’t in the Booster Course Pass yet, all 4 will appear in this final wave. While there have been some good Tour-originals throughout the Pass, they’ve been distinctly hit-and-miss, and the city tracks definitely blend together a bit with 12 of them in the game.
The appearance of the characters in the Thousand Year Door remake remind me of Sticker Star’s key art (https://mario.wiki.gallery/images/5/54/PMSS_Mario_Shiny_Album.png), probably only because of the different segments/layers having their own depth to them. Also, the talking sound effects are quite funny to me, likely due to the fact that some are audibly existing sound clips cut apart, and the original game used the same ones for almost every character. Didn’t play the original, though, and having played other RPGs in the past, like the Mario & Luigi games, I feel confident in the assertion that they’re better as spectator sports for me.
All the other announcements, I don’t really care that much about, and would probably just poke fun at if I were to speak on them.
I’m torn (lol) on the paper mario reveal.
On one hand, FUCK YEAH TTYD is one of if not THE greatest Mario RPG of all time. I’m 100% buying this because it’s a fantastic game and I want more games like it to come.
On the other hand, it’s been over a decade sense the original game was released, and one thing I’ve always fantasized about when this game eventually would be remade, was the concept of a Luigi’s Compass side mode to add extra content to the game. It looks like that idea has been thrown out in favor of an HD improvement to graphics.
Which while I imagine took ages with dozens of people working really hard to perfect… But to be honest, I prefer the old graphics. It’s a bit like making a live-action remake of a classic animated film.
Mario fans, me included, been eating good this direct. If only we’ll ever get a permanent release of mario 35, that would be the happiest day for me.
Also this rpgs look interesting. I’ll keep an eye out for them.
The splatoon dlc looks promising as well. Can’t wait for it.
Paper mario probably the games that needed remakes the least.
I’m curious, what games would you have preferred? I’m really excited for the remake personally!
Not that other games are in particular need, paper mario is particularly not in need, due to its art style, theyve aged amazingly. Heck even in this trailer a lot of the environment has distinct polygon edges, because it was always intentional, its folded paper.
I guess sort of like the original Toy Story shouldnt ever need a remake because the plasticy old 3D look was intentional for a movie about toys.
While I agree copies of the original game are insanely expensive nowadays and not everyone wants to go down the emulation route so it’s nice that people will be able to buy it again at a reasonable price.
Hotel Dusk! And we were so close this time!
