At the Munich Security Conference, the “shared values” so frequently invoked by Europeans were called into question by US Vice President JD Vance. So do the US and Europe still speak the same language?
Dear World,
Do what you need to do. We understand. We’ll hopefully see you in four years, maybe two.
- American’ts
Ameri-won’ts
Sorry gang I don’t have faith in us
I have learned how surprisingly many of my countrymen are damagingly ignorant, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and just shitty enough to be trolls for lols regardless of the harm. It’s really really surprising how many people are. But they don’t all vote. What is even more surprising is how many decent people can’t be bothered to vote, even if they aren’t totally on board with the “better” side, to keep the objectively worse side at bay.
Because we jerked off about killing the Nazis for like a century and were fat lazy fucks in our ivory towers. Obviously we’re ignorant shitty morons we have no real experience and think we do.
America’s reckoning was written on the walls and anyone with a brain has seen it just a matter of who would push that button and this president just might
Maybe in fourty
Yeah I’d think Germany and allies have had enough experience with Nazis to not want to deal with the USA right now.
If you think Germany has learned their lesson from Nazism, I’m afraid I have to disappoint you. They are funding a genocide as we speak and obstructing justice by defying the European Court of Justice over the issue.
We see how Germany and allies handled Russia already…
US is a clown show but US grievances predate trump or maga.
How are they going to defend a remote island with 50 K population an ocean away from a hegemon, when europe can’t handle Russian in its back yard in a weakened state.
Some serious cognitive dissonance
You mean how can Denmark defend Greenland against a US invasion? If the USA tried to invade that small island, the would probably take it but it would destroy relations if the USA acted with force. US based worldwide would need to be reconsidered. The bases are no there for Europe’s benefit. Not to mention the trade disruption.
Trump is stupid enough to do it but it would be equally bad for both. Greenland offers no advantage to most of Europe as a whole as they are individual counties. So, the disruption would be in the after effects, not the loss of Greenland. Greenland only has significance for Trump insofar as it affects shipping rights, especially for Russia.
Europe should be doing more to combat Russia in Ukraine, I agree. However, Russia was considered an ally and trade partner by counties like Germany (even if an untrustworthy ally). Russia is struggling in Ukraine. A drawn out war is bad for Ukraine but also bad for Russia, so from Europe’s point of view, not necessarily terrible, even if that is unethical.
That’s a fair analysis.
However, does not have any track record on handling Russia or US in any meaningful sense of the word. How are people expecting EU to do both of these things now?
The whole thing looks like a charade. Such geo political posture requires some credibility of hard power.
You want to see hard power get into play? You want outright military threats/conflict with the EU?
Nuke yourselves.
What point are you trying to make here?
Are you saying that the US has a reasonable basis upon which to undermine diplomatic ties with Germany? If so, what is that basis and how does it outweigh the benefits of continued partnership?
- US should not be disrespecting our allies esp not countries like MX and CA
- Germany specifically but other EU counties could not align on Ukraine issue for the longest time. I don’t think EU has capability to jack shit about US behavior. That’s concerning in of itself.
- If EU thinks that they can play like a superpower they will need to prove something like that the old school way. Like winning the war in Ukraine… or successful defense of Greenland if this clown time line gets extra retarded.
- EU gonna need do the thing and so far all we see is the same tired finger wagging bullshit. It is tiring.
- At the rate this shit is going, AfD wins and flips Germany into alliance with Russia
Demonstrably, Russia can’t even conquer its weakest neighbors. A bigger issue is if and when China enters the fray.
France, Poland, and South Korea are positioned to be the new leaders of the free world
SOUTH KOREA? Didn’t they JUST have a constitutional crisis? Also France, Poland, Germany are all having a far right problem of their own right now.
Didn’t say they were perfect. But they’re at least taking action to staunch the bleeding. Here in America, we’re bleeding out on the floor
South Korea demonstrated they can get through a constitutional crisis, so in a sense this is a good indicator for their longevity.
As a Pole I see some similarities between Poland and South Korea but we also have similar weaknesses. Poland and SK have one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. Nothing wrong with that choice but I’d argue it’s not a choice. People just stopped trying due to being stuck in capitalist hellholes. We’re also very averse to immigration (and apparently nonchalant about our retirement). With that in mind, we’re in no position to lead anything. And that’s just one of many reasons why.
South Korea is facing tons of internal strife, likely orchestrated by Chinese influences.
or treating their worker like a disposal asset for 2-3 generations…
You know that could result in people saying they be tired, boss
They transitioned from an Agricultural nation in the 1960s to a high tech industrial nation now, GDP per capita rose from $100 to over $30,000 and had one of the most dramatic decreases in poverty the world has ever seen going from over half in the 1950s being in “absolute poverty” to less than 3.4% in the 1990s. While a large majority of Koreans agree with the statement that those born into poverty cannot compete with those born into wealth, they’ve also got much less wealth inequality than the USA and some other nations. Their wealth concentration is only 1.4% of the population make more than 100M Won (~$70,000 USD or ~€67,000 EURO) and 37.8% make less than 12,000,000 Won ($8,300 USD or €7,900 EURO) they have fewer billionaires per capita than most developed nations, 34 nations to be exact, including Canada, Australia, Italy, USA, Russia, Itally, etc.
Plus they get weekend overtime at 12 and again at 16 hours.
Clearly that’s not perfect but its a hell of a lot better than fucking China where the government solves homelessness by pretending it doesn’t exist, or North Korea which honestly doesn’t even need to be stated.
Tell me more about this overtime.
I can’t really give you the first or second hand account, I don’t speak Korean, but there are a lot of English translations of the Korean Labor Standards Act which outlines lots of nice stuff such as maximum 52 hours a week for work meaning a max of 12 overtime for combined weekdays, weekend and holiday pay qualifying as overtime after 12 and 16 hours, max 2 hours overtime per weekday for women with young children and 3 hours for workers under 18.
There are also lots of little caveats and details such as overtime pay being negotiable via contract to exchange for time off instead, or companies involved in security being able to apply for exemption via approval by Minister of Employment and Labor.
Also, supposedly the LSA isn’t properly enforced everywhere yet despite the original being passed in 1997, updates as recent as 2021 and 2024, but it’s implemented for the large majority of people.
tbh, for european standards, that still sounds pretty bad.
for examle here: 45 hour work week, sunday labor is generally banned, with 6 sundays/year being the limit and having to be paid 50% extra for that work, plus being required to compensate for that day by taking an extra day off the following week. Overtime 2 hour/day, 170 hours/year, 25% extra pay or compensate by taking off same amount of time. Of course there’s also exceptions, same as everywhere.
and this is still relatively bad compared to e.g. france with its 35 hour work week.
Honestly the European sounds worse than the SK to me, except for the part about the 2 hours max is for everyone and not just women with children and people below 18. The 170 hours cap on overtime sounds okay, keeps them from abusing certain people in particular, but the sunday restrictions just sound like pointless theocracy.
Their fertility rate is speak for itself… they hate their own population but women especially. This is an endemic issue across the world but South Korea takes cakes this cake. Sure economic development for to enrich the oligarchy is nice. But if people are not having kids, it is indicative of deeper issue within the social structure that no amount capitalist friendly stats can resolve unless daddy finally gets his AI and robots to really replace us all.
Constantly shifting the goalpost, do you have an actual reason for disliking SK or are you just some kind of fucking Tankie?
or treating their worker like a disposal asset for 2-3 generations…
US commits horrible war crimes for decades:
I sleep or even help them
US starts trade war:
real shit, time for me to grand stand
Is this what they’re talking about “shared values”. Poor (especially brown) people are expendable, but economies aren’t.
Pray we don’t redefine “freedom” further.
After nap time.
