Whole grain is a term used by capitalists to deceive people. The skin of grains is called bran. It was previously fed to pigs, but now it is sold to humans at a higher price.
Well, they’re not wrong.
Whole grain is a term used by capitalists to deceive people. The skin of grains is called bran.
If the skin or bran is part of the grain, including it makes the grain whole. Hence the term “whole grain”. I’m sure the term was in fact not invented by capitalists. I think originally, refined grain was seen as the more luxurious alternative; at least here, it was associated with higher status for a time.
They didn’t say “invented”. They said “used by”. The idea that whole grains are better for you doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. They might even be worse for you, because they’re harder to digest. So, it is, in fact, a term used by capitalists to deceive you.
I searched for studies about while gains and can only find some claiming benefits, like https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9777732/, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5310957/ and https://www.bmj.com/content/353/bmj.i2716 (I searched for “whole grain study” to not bring a bias into it). The effect of fiber in diet is generally seen as positive as being easily digestible isn’t the only metric. Raw sugar can be digested really easily, yet a diet consisting solely if it is usually not suggested or recommended.
They said “used by”
Which term isn’t used by “capitalists” to deceive you?
Most “capitalist” products here use refined grain. Almost no brand uses whole grain. For comparable products, the price of whole grain vs refined is basically the same.
China has historically been quick to ban foreign web services authorities don’t approve of.
Apparently the US does too.
Western food is regarded with bemused horror in China. There’s a retired English engineer who lives there whose wife posts videos of him making the sandwiches he eats for lunch: he has a bit of a following, who refer to him as Old Dry Keith.
RedNote users, while you’re at it, can you show Americans some high speed electric trains and get them interested in it? Thanks.
Let’s start basic, we don’t want anyone to get overwhelmed. How about the high-speed line in Morocco, Africa? (186km/115mi long HSR section at up to 320km/h / ~200mi/h)
I’ve re-read this comment three times and can’t get over “Morocco, Africa”. I’ve never seen a country referred to like this in my life.
You’re right, it’s a strange way to refer to a country, I only wrote it that way to emphasize the fact that an African country already has more HSR than the US. The truth is that many outsiders still carry a default impression of Africa as just desert and savannahs and TV ads asking for donations to famine-striken villages, rather than a diverse continent with some impressive cities and growing modern infrastructure already. Western mainstream media doesn’t really expose us to Africa often beyond war and conflict news, and wildlife documentaries.
Good. So is everyone that sees our school lunches and isn’t a part of the system that forces the bullshit on our students.
They hate us for our freedom fries.
You got fries? We got green bananas, dry bread, chicken sandwiches (bread, dry “chicken”, bread, and nothing else) and a thimble of juice.
It’s cherrypicking, but apart from TV and cartoons who are likely to exaggerate, my impression of US school lunches is from Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, and Jamie looked like they were about to cry.
I say cherrypicking because it was considered one of the most obese towns in the USA, Huntington, West Virginia, but it’s absolutely dystopic. Soylent Green would be a step up, nutritionally.
edit: I can’t easily find the scene of the kids eating, but this two minute clip goes over Jamie’s disappointment at the food products being served. “I’d never seen kids being given pizza of any kind for breakfast before.” “Do you really recognise any of those ingredients?”
Coincidentally, just a few weeks ago Tasting History With Max Miller made the same iconic pizza that many of us fondly remember eating as kids for lunch/breakfast at school.
‘Pourable pizza crust’ is a new one for me, I wonder which shapes would be fun. I suppose the stage of food technology at the time ended up forcing the food to be healthier, Max is dealing with ingredients I can name and buy rather than the cyanocobalamin and thiamine mononitrate in modern day rations pizza. Thanks for sharing!
Always cool to see the BPP social programs mentioned.
that does look disgusting if that is a legit school lunch

The whole concept sounds so fake to me. You mean you don’t just make and take your own lunch? Why not? Do you have to pay for the lunch or is it includes in your fees?
I always just took some PBJ sandwiches, a yoghurt, a muesli bar, a piece of fruit, maybe a cookie or a chocolate or some seaweed. It’s not exactly time consuming to throw that together in the morning, takes maybe 5 minutes or less
You certainly have the option to take your own lunch, and many students do, but the fact is that a lot of American families just can’t afford to. Lunches provided by the school are usually less than $2, and there are federal free or reduced-cost lunch programs for families that can’t afford that.
For my kids, specifically, their school provides free lunch for every student. Additionally–and this does not seem to be the typical experience–they both absolutely love their school lunches.
Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I should have mentioned but you probably figured out , that I live in a country (NZ) where (most?) schools don’t provide lunches.
Now that you mention the cost angle I think I’ve heard of some schools providing free … breakfast? For kids who show up hungry. But this was specifically a social aid program and not something that was designed/funded to be used by a majority of students.

That’s how it started here.

Respectfully, you don’t understand how bad things are for the average American.
Neither does the average American. We are a nation of temporarily embarrassed millionaires.
