You can see the birth of the american empire through his life. He grew up during the tail end of the “American Indian wars.” He joined the military at 16 and was deployed to Haiti, Cuba, Philipines, China, Nicaragua and Mexico before heading off to WW1.

The owner class reads Marx and gets from it “you can get really rich by owning the means of production and leveraging it to exploit others” so it’s not much of a stretch to take “the more private influence you’re able to get over government the more opportunity for you to get rich off graft” from War is a Racket.
Fantastic story, and the novel is worth reading
