i mean i get it. they’ve set it up so that people can get money for the things they develop within the game, which makes it a viable platform for modders to survive on. it’s basically paid mods again, but more direct.

The future fucking sucks. Id been looking forward to this game for years since I loved Gmod so much growing up.

Every mod id ever played has been free. Them transitioning away from this model means there is no reason to ever get S&box for myself, id rather just enjoy the millions of free mods in Gmod.

If you’ve actively played Gmod in a multiplayer setting and you weren’t the server admin: i doubt that. Gmod has a still thriving paid modding community, mostly for extensions for Pointshops, TTT content or other game modifiers. It maybe was free to you though ;)

I played from 2010 till around 2016. The only paid mods like Clockwork mods were heavily ridiculed and even almost sued since they were making money off something that wasn’t their ip (this was 10+ years ago, I’m sure I’m misremembering).

Donations for in game perks have always been a thing, and the server owner would use said donations to have custom things made sure, but the very vast majority of regular players never once even thought of paying for mods.

It’s a gross symptom of our society.

I’ve been seeing a loooooooot of koffi links in workshop pages lately. And not just for GMod, but Zomboid as well.

Which, I get it. It’s a side project done out of passion for the game, so they may stick a link in their mod description for some tips if people feel like it. I don’t think I’d ever personally do it though.

meh, i’m ambivalent. s&box will probably be a lot more flexible than gmod due to deeper access and a higher performance language. that will most likely lead to some very high quality mods.

besides, i was active on the fp forums between 2006 and 2012ish, some people just refused to take money. we asked them for donation links and they said no.

I’ve owned Rust for years. Tried playing it for the first time ever a couple weeks ago, and you can only play on servers, meaning it has to be played multiplayer; there’s no option to start a single player server or whatever on your own machine. In order to truly play how you want, you need to buy a server from a third-party website. Part of me thinks that the game has a certain charm with forcing you to play with other randoms, but the rest of me was absolutely turned off by that. I just wanted to play my own save to see how the game is. Nope.

Also, the sheer amount of DLCs for the game that apparently don’t necessarily need to be bought if you happen to kill someone that has the stuff.
