I have no problem with zoom meetings in general. I hate zoom meetings that should have been an email. I hate turning on my camera because it’s none of their damn business if I’ve combed my hair this morning when I work remotely. I hate being in zoom meetings that I was required to attend but have no function other than a time sink for me. I hate zoom meetings where one person didn’t read the documentation/email and takes up the entire meeting asking questions about things that have already been answered. I hate daily zoom meetings where everyone says “I’m working on the same thing I’ve been working on for two weeks and will continue for another two weeks”.

So there’s at least two zoom meetings a month that I’m pretty jazzed to be a part of. One is a requirements meeting and the other is a planning meeting. New information, needs to be a meeting, meaningful work, and no one cares if the cameras are on.

Oh, absolutely. I think Zoom meetings have highlighted just how bad and needless a lot of meetings are because they can be recorded, and bad managers who want to pretend to be doing something with remote workers have called extra needless meetings.

I don’t have nearly as many as I bitch about these days. The last place I worked had a damn meeting for everything though. Someone misspelled something when adding notes to a story? Meeting! Fuck that.

A lot of it just comes from having worked for a bunch of companies over almost two decades (fuck, when did I get old?). The first place I worked in my career had one meeting a week and it was just chaos because the director who called it didn’t want to control it. That was our only meeting because anything else took away from billable time, as did bathroom breaks if you took too many. So I’ve seen places with far too many stupid meetings, too few meetings that also ended up being stupid, and a very few places that had pretty good meetings that were well run.

I mean, I hate meetings. It’s almost always some bullshit I can completely disregard, just shut up and let me get back to swinging my hammer! The worst was back in the day when I’d get off at 4am from a bar dish shift and have to be in for a meeting at 7, so they can go over “this months new drinks!” Bro IDGAF what’s in the cups, you bring me cup I wash cup, why am I awake rn?!
