After quite a while, @crashdoom has finally found something to do with pawb.social – Introducing, Lemmy!

Lemmy is a selfhosted, federated social link aggregation and discussion forum, similar to Reddit, but using ActivityPub just like Mastodon.

This instance will serve as Pawb.Social’s foot-in-the-door and an expansion of our services beyond Mastodon, but we won’t be restricting usage to just users from furry.engineer and pawb.fun – Anyone is free to join!

Any user can create their own community within the instance, share it with other instances, and create a conversation around their favorite topics.

Though, if you have a Mastodon account already, you don’t need an account to post here! Just take the community name to the right (e.g. pawbsocial_announcements, remove the !) and mention it in a post:

@[email protected] Hey, I can post to Lemmy from Mastodon!

You can also follow the community group account to get new posts straight on your existing Mastodon feed!

We’ll be utilizing two communities for official purposes: Pawb.Social Announcements for news and info about Pawb.Social services and Pawb.Social Feedback to receive feedback, issues, and comments on policy from our users.

We hope you’ll enjoy and help us create yet another amazing community together!

Hey, thanks for setting this nice little server up.

Just wondering if it is just me or that most non-local communities seem to have no replies / votes, but when viewed from their home instance I can see them. Is this because viewing comments and votes across instances is not yet possible?

I say most non-local communities because the posts on the All page seem to work fine, but when I want to check a non-local niche community it looks dead - even though there is activity that’s viewable from their instance.

As far as I’m aware, posts (and I guess replies) only start being received when at least one person is subscribed to it. So if it’s a community you are interested in and you subscribe, pawb.social should start receiving all comments and replies from that point on.

You can also put a direct link to a thread (but not a comment) in the search box, and it will be fetched if it is not already available.

Admits joining because I thought you were a Welsh instance and “pawb” meant everyone. I am a disaster. That said, hello!

    Henlo Lemmy ^-^

I’m a Reddit Refugee who’s been exploring federated social media after the recent chaos on corporate sites. Slowly learning all of the jargon for how all this works, but it looks like a neat concept that will foster a nice cozy community :3

I wish the cozy community was the biggest reason for my involvement, but honestly the feeling of having hundreds of people using the server hardware I tinker with is really exciting!

I handle the local hardware and crashdoom handles the software. Honestly he does the hard part IMO.

Hello fluffy friends! (And Welsh friend!) Reddit gave me a blackout for my cake day, so I decided I’d try to figure out how all this federated stuff works before they pull the plug on my lunch break reading material too.

Please do! Would love this to become an awesome way to bring up and discuss topics in more detail than is possible on Mastodon itself!

    Heyo!

Thanks for hosting this! Is it worth creating an account on Mastodon too? Still trying to wrap my head around the whole fediverse thing.

I’d say so, they do serve different purposes and it isn’t yet possible to follow Mastodon accounts from Lemmy.

Mastodon is to Twitter, as Lemmy is to Reddit. :3

Ah gotcha. Have to admit I hadn’t actually looked into Mastodon until now, just assumed it was the same concept as lemmy and kbin. But yeah it’s essentially Twitter, UI-wise at least. Never been much of a Twitter user myself though

I find they have different use cases. Masto is really good for more immediate conversion, especially with the really responsive home feed.

Not my thing (Reddit refugee turned lemmy host here), but it definitely has its place!
