    I don’t even get the point they’re trying to make! Is it that only sheltered and material comfortable children are capable of having a conscience? That thinking we have any influence over our elected officials is naive idealism of thr sort only possessed by people too young to know better?

      Yeah that’s basically it. The idea is that anyone insisting on taking a hard stance is only able to be idealistic because have no skin in the game and that the people who really know how things work due to lived experience are cold pragmatists out of necessity. It’s a standard Internet thing where the argument is appropriate in other contexts, but has been coopted by people who don’t have any respect for that appropriate context and just engage in sophistry whenever the argument will make them sound smarter.

        Isn’t it also kind of racist? Like white people can’t care about things or hold strong political beliefs because of white privilege?
