here we don’t want to deal with this shit anymore, you do all the free work
There’s no work left to do on Mono and this is just handing over stewardship of the old code for legacy purposes.
The .NET framework adds new APIs all the time
? not really lol
.NET Framework was retired years ago by Microsoft and is in maintenance mode.
.NET (formerly .NET Core) is actively developed and is where Mono was forked into, hence Mono no longer being required. About the only thing Mono might be used for now is running .NET Framework binaries directly on Linux where you might not want the full .NET Framework under wine for compatibility or whatever reason. For example, running TShock (a Terraria server implementation) on Linux.
and is in maintenance mode
probably still like a million annual cost of labor for Microsoft to upkeep
Thank you Microsoft! Eternal gratitude for the kind things you do for us in the Free Software community…
I’m not explicitly mentioned in the post, but effectively the maintainer duties for the Mono project now fall on me.
I am going to have to request that issues and code contributions be refiled at Winehq for those who still care about them. I have enough on my plate just getting things up and running in their new home, along with my other duties at CodeWeavers, and I don’t have the bandwidth to sort through that whole backlog.
libgdiplus does, as it’s a Mono (class library) dependency. So do any submodules. But I don’t think we can handle separate projects like MonoDevelop, unless they’re important for some reason.
I can’t spend any time on it, I’m stretched thin as it is. Winehq could probably provide a space for it, but I can’t help with development.
You can feel their complete despair
I hope this means I can use paint.NET on wine, because that one single program is the reason I dual boot.
Paint.NET 3.5 works fine under Wine. Later versions will require better Direct2D implementation from Wine.
Consider using free software instead: https://lazpaint.github.io/
I don’t use version 3.5, I use version 5.0.13. And it is so out of the league of lazPaint it’s unreal.
God damn, I’ve got a LOT of music software I still keep Windows for. Cubase and Native Instruments mostly, and there’s not a chance in hell they’ll ever release Linux versions
Music software is a very valid reason to avoid Linux
Goofy aah C#
Who remembers mono develop? I do
