chinese is wierd in that pre-1919 there were no gendered pronouns until the adoption of 她, before that all people were addressed as 他, both are written differently but they’re pronounced the same way in mandarin

Always find it interesting how often native Mandarin speakers with good English tend to just freely switch between he and she for the same person in spoken English, but never in writing.
