A lot of profiles will say things like “only looking for friends” and such, but that’s more about image than reality in case someone else sees it (though, yes, everyone knows what is actually going on). That is why I hedged a bit in my last sentence; there is a lot more info available today and through a greater variety of sources. Disinformation, though, is certainly a problem moreso than it was when I was younger.
I was one of those american far-right evangelical conservatives and grew up where it was not uncommon to hear “that’s jewish” to mean something uncool and hear about “the synagogues of satan” in church. I definitely stopped feeling that way once I got out on my own and out of that bubble and would be horrified the impact that my decisions would have had on others. The pastor at one church we went to actually came over in I think 1989 or 1990 from Wagga Wagga and I spent a fair bit of time with them growing up.
I would sometimes clinch my jaw (I do that when not on stimulants anyway, but it’s worse on them) which seemed to be connected (though I can’t prove that). Trying to be conscious of and relax when I noticed it seemed to help.
You clearly missed the point above where I wrote “ending up needing to cut gluten” which kinda precludes eating most of the things on that list.
These days, except for once a week, I am eating: oatmeal, brown rice (regionally-sourced), some meat (chicken, fish, or pork in order of frequency) I’ve cooked, some veg (much of which I grow myself) I’ve cooked, and some sauce I’ve (at least mostly – I’m not brewing my own soy sauce) made, and often a bit of cheese. Dessert, when I have it, is a handful of chocolate chips. I am still almost always hungry. Once a week, I eat sushi or something similar and have an ice cream.
My phone didn’t even do text/SMS, heh.
I’m working to get an income stream in another currency as well because of that. It hurts for anything imported for sure, especially given a lot of fuel is imported, but it’s still workable for now. If/when they get around to turning on some of the nuclear plants again or getting them replaced with renewables, energy costs and fuel imports should at least drop again.
Not Australian but I definitely wouldn’t want 16-year-old me to have voted in the '90s, but that may have been a product of where I was in the rural US, access to information, etc. Maybe it’s different there and now.
Are you tensing up at all? Stimulants can do that. Also, were blood pressure and heartrate OK?
I moved to Japan which has its good and bad points (like anywhere). If I had it to do over, I’d probably pick Norway or Finland instead, but I plan on spending the rest of my life here barring some earth-shattering change.

This is a bit too vague for me, but I think some of what you mention sounds like inconvenience now for future convenience. For safety plan example, it’s mildly inconvenient for me to get my kit together (I live in an earthquake-heavy area and just outside the tsunami hazard zone), know locations and routes, etc. but you’d best believe that it’s better to pay that inconvenience now than flap if I do have to evacuate. I think timescales are important to think of (kinda like the RoI of your actions).
I’ve seen uni entrance exam tests and it’s definitely just there for the test – no one speaks the way they do in those. I was never a teacher, though, so I’m just going on what my friends say (my wife hated English class and never paid attention, so she doesn’t remember much).
To be fair, the JLPT also tends to include outdated Japanese, so there’s that as well.
I can see the difference, but I think it takes practice. シ lines coming from left, line align with bottom left and ツ lines coming from top and all 3 roughly align at top.

In the US, not really. Even if the phone itself was cheap, the plans were high. We moved my last year of highschool and my mom got a phone for me to keep in the car. It was only to call 911 for emergencies because the cost per minute was crazy.
It’s a common statement, but I think it’s a bit too generalized. Japan is still bleeding-edge in some very niche areas, but a lot of technology in daily life is behind. A lot of stuff still requires going in person, phone calls, faxes, and a seal stamp to get done. I was able to do something through the bloated, awful eTax software today after hours of fighting with it yesterday (need to run several things as admin, install plugins as admin, have Japanese as the main browser language, and have Japanese locale of PC and it’s still cludgy and unreliable).
It gets easier and I agree with saying it aloud. Once you start getting used to patterns, you can decipher them more easily (at least the ones from a language you speak). Remember no diphthongs and each syllable gets one beat.
My pet theory is that it’s also how the infamous “No Smorking” Engrish came about in reverse. The ‘o’ in smoking tends to sound long and a lot of times words that sound like that to the Japanese from English will be (long-sounding vowel)+r.
I wonder what protections they have. Japan has been fighting a similar thing and upping protections and their enforcement, but it’s still not where it needs to be.
