Thank you. That makes sense why some downstream distros designed for specific purposes (e.g. gaming) might include a handful of their own repos for specific software.
I’m not even sure it can, unless they want to pay server operators. Who would do that for free for a for-profit company? And if they’re ultimately supported by the top, they’re still centralized.
Not that it’s super expensive to run a server, but it ain’t free; at least in a place like the Fediverse, every transaction is voluntary all the way down to the financial support, because any part may choose to participate or leave as they see fit.
I don’t see how BlueSky can replicate that and still chase profit.
How does that work, exactly? I don’t actually know. Are they compiling their own copies of the upstream code changes?
And I know people think it’s mean to keep kicking a geriatric president when he’s a lame duck.
I’m okay with it when it’s for legitimate reasons, and I think you have some legitimate ones. He did some real good on infrastructure and renewables, but he still fucked up in a lot of other ways. What’s annoying is when people say he was either infallible or the very embodiment of evil.
We should accept the good while condemning the bad, because most people are more complex and nuanced than the caricatures presented by the internet.
But to your last point, I agree that we will continue to lose to the Donald Trumps of the world if we don’t have someone willing to publicly promise to fight and hold the entire rotten establishment accountable.
They wouldn’t cancel each other out, because the number of young people able to take care of the aging population will still be too few. Add to that the fact that pay won’t go up with automation, because it never does, and the problem is still Capitalism and its activists strangling us to death.
Totally for real! /s
The title is dumb, but I can at least say I was smart enough not to have originated it. Still, the actual idea seems to have some preliminary promise, even if it’s not actually “unlimited.”
Yeah, the title sucks, but the tech hopefully won’t.
It’s a way cooler picture than the reality, which is probably that they hacked a laptop on a different network that could access the target endpoint.
I dunno, I won’t read it either, because I want to believe in your vision.
linux has this problem of experienced users raining downright useless and often counterproductive advice on noobs.
Not to be rude, but you might want to take your own advice. I see a lot of hyperbole in your two, frankly, rants. “Greybeards” might have ruined your experience, but most people around here just want to help.
Asking the important questions
Imagine sitting down with an AI model for a spoken two-hour interview. A friendly voice guides you through a conversation that ranges from your childhood, your formative memories, and your career to your thoughts on immigration policy. Not long after, a virtual replica of you is able to embody your values and preferences with stunning accuracy.
Okay, but can it embody my traumas?
I was in the same boat. Banks are lazy and often won’t underwrite custom loans that fall outside their automatic software, but there are still some who will.
If you don’t have a score (which I’m convinced some mortgage people think means a bad score, because they’re fucking idiots who can’t listen), you can ask to speak to someone in charge or go elsewhere, but there are lenders who will work with you. Got ours through USDA, which took longer and was custom underwriting, but still got the terms about two weeks later.
Honestly, the ones who survive well are the ones who build communities that take care of each other: Sharing meals, sharing gardens, sharing skills and labor, sharing rides, sharing emotions and stories, etc.
Capitalism was always pushing the US towards a gigantic class divide, and Boomers and Gen X carried that torch at the expense of their descendants’ future. Communities of support are something that will have helped regardless of who is carrying what ideology and regardless of who is in charge, and they thrive in adversity.
So if you’re looking for advice, build your local communities. Strengthen your bonds with your neighbors. Participate in local governance.
Does linux support from manufacturer really matter?
Only they can truly answer for themselves, but from a business standpoint, yes. It might. Being able to get support direct from the people who made/sold the laptop, whether it be in the form of a warranty or tech support, could save you from having down time when you need to be working.
I know what I said.
It was a joint effort of idiocy.
Because half the voting population is idiots.
…you’re just mad they’re not as miserable as you want them to be. Or more likely not as miserable as they truly are on the inside…
This is probably more true than even they realize.
And even if we assume they work(ed) those alleged 14h days, 6.5 days a week, that does not mean the rest of the world must have the same work aspirations or methods. The idea that a silkscreen printer must work the same hours as the company president, for example, is arbitrary and insane.
Does it mention the Shnigedy Ding Dong?
