Dockworkers should once again decisively vote down the government-dictated agreement they have been presented with. But if they are to prevail, this must only be the first step in the development of a political struggle against both the greedy shipping and port bosses and the big business Liberal government.
I imagine the thinking is that the government doesn’t need them to vote yes, they’ll be able to build up enough public support for back to work legislation if they vote the contract down enough times. That said, knowing that this same government legislated Montreal longshoreman back to work just a couple years ago, I figured this conflict would go a similar way. I think the hope has to be that other unions take a page from the Ontario education worker strike from last year and threaten a solidarity strike.
