I believe Christians want to take wrongful credit for the enlightenment. Really the enlightenment was a period of time when scholars in science gained the courage to denounce the false scientific statements made by the church. It took a lot of courage too given events like the Spanish Inquisition and the social stigma of ex-communication. Those going against the church risked their freedom, abuse, and torture.
