I have a huge Mario gap in my gaming history because I ended up going: nes > Sega Genesis > ps1 > ps2 > ps3/wii > PC gaming (where I am today) there’s a lot I missed from Nintendo over the years but I recently played through this game and I personally loved how original and new/fresh it felt. Definitely reminded me of how i felt about Mario 3 on nes when I first played it.

What say you? Did you enjoy it? Want to see this become a new series in the Mario saga?

It was good fun. I enjoyed the whimsical and trippy bits with the flower you could get in each level… and how the game mechanics changed each time.

Whether or not it deserves a series though??? I don’t really think so. These smaller Mario games like Wonder, 3D World, Bowser’s Fury, and New Super Mario Bros U to me are nice little appetizers between bigger 3D open world adventures like Odyssey and Galaxy. More than anything, I’d love love love LOVE to see a sequel of some sort for Odyssey or at least a few DLC worlds. But with Mario Wonder just releasing, and getting a Mario movie, I don’t think we’re going to see another major open world Mario game until the Switch’s successor releases.

I liked Wonder; I liked the movie; but if given the choice, 10 times out of 10 I’d choose even DLC for Odyssey over either of them… Wonder and the Movie were fun. Odyssey was pure joy. It’s been a looooong time since a video game made me unconsciously smile for as long as Odyssey did.

Agreed, I wasn’t even that excited for Odyssey (Mario Sunshine and Galaxy 1/2 just didn’t really capture me the same way Mario 64 did). But man, was I in for a surprise. Once I started, I literally couldn’t think of playing anything else until the very end. It really is a masterpiece in game design for just simply being fun.

So yeah, I’d love for the next Mario game to iterate on what made Odyssey so great. Wonder is fun and it’s good, but it isn’t close to being Odyssey good.

I think if I was playing alone I would like it more. The co-op design, particularly online, is not that great.

Of course they’re going to make more.

I agree that couch coop is still a bit rough (until they fix the “camera only follows leader”), but i had a blast with the online multiplayer

Online multiplayer is basically single player while you watch your friends play in the background. If they die nearby, you might be able help them, but if they get stuck on a particularly arduous platforming sequence, you quickly leave them behind and can’t really lend a hand in any way. The Mickey game was nice in that the camera would zoom out to accommodate other players, let you drop a rope for friends to climb, and you could share health. I think that was a very solid implementation of co-op for comparison - even though the genre of game is a bit different.

I don’t really think there are ‘series’ in the Mario saga. There’s basically two streams of Mario game that have co-existed since Mario 64 - the 2D games and the 3D games.

Mario Wonder is the best 2D one I’ve played in years. Right back to SNES Mario World.

I’m more than happy to have more 2D ones like this.

I think it is fantastic. Great level design, some of the wonder flowers had me laughing and some had me crying, though I have yet to 100% it (getting close). It’s 2D Mario done well! It’s not supposed to be baldurs gate level deep, it’s Mario wahooo

I’m having a great time with it. My wife and I are going through it together. Local multiplayer works great.

Having played various Mario games starting with NES I really enjoy the side-scrolling retro feel.

My partner and I are also enjoying it. The way the screen can only follow one person has killed us many times, but so far that’s the only bad fault.

Definitely adds to the challenge, but forces us to talk through the levels so that we move together.

It is my favourite 2D Mario game. Level design is really good, I like new power ups and physics are very good. Wonder effects are mostly interesting but there are few boring ones. Bosses aren’t that bad to me, it is a shame that it’s only Bowser Jr. and that some worlds don’t have a boss but fights on their own aren’t bad. Final boss is the best 2D Mario boss to me for now (I haven’t played all 2D Mario games). New playable characters are also really nice (besides Yoshi i Nabbit being easy mode) and badges are really good.

It’s a really good game but I think that it is a bit overrated and even though it is my favourite 2D Mario it isn’t my favourite 2D platformer.

It’s the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World. I finished it with 6/6 medals (i.e., completed every last thing in the game). The five-star levels are a good challenge, although “The Final-Final Test” (final special level after acquiring 5/6 medals) is just cruel.

Feels like they took the best ideas from Mario Maker, polished it up to a glowing shine, mixed in some great movement, threw in a metric fuckton of whimsy and joy, and overall made a great game.

I think the only reason I liked it is bcz it reminded me so much of Super Mario World 2. It was just the right amount of new and nostalgia.

It definitely did change 2d mario though? This game is wildly different in every aspect than any other 2d mario.
