I was surprised to visit itjust.works (without the sh.) and find an IT company. How did the url sh.itjust.works come to be, amazing name and all?
From this thread: https://sh.itjust.works/post/4706
There’s this comment: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/30682 which seems to indicate possession of some fairly beefy hardware (supported by a business).
As for the rest… ?
See https://sh.itjust.works/comment/113002 for the story of sh. Like I said in that comment, I can’t prove I was the one BC I nuked my reddit account, but the tldr is I was being a smartass on reddit and they rolled with it so naturally I had to join this instance, lol.
lol that’s amazing!
An instance is born
So this has been fixed. itjust.works should redirect properly to sh.itjust.works now
R.I.P.
Haha, well sir: that IT company owns the itjust.works TLD and apparently someone there used the same domain for the instance. Sh is just a subdomain of itjust.works.
Fine and hilarious folks at itjust.works: get a certificate for your webpage!
If you click on the logo for XIRGO it takes you to a site with a certificate. I think whoever owns XIRGO set up the itjust.works domain for some redirects and decided lemmy would be the best time to use the domain. @TheDude Am i right?
That makes sense. I have a defunct personal business domain that I’ve been thinking of repurposing for an instance.
I believe I recall reading a thread about Lemmy and someone said “I own the domain itjust.works, suggest a subdomain and I’ll host an instance” and someone replied with “sh.itjust.works.” Then again, I may have hallucinated this.
honestly the name is hallucinated enough to be true
