I noticed my X20 Seagate from Newegg was missing 7 months from it’s warranty when registered on the Seagate website. This is a common issue, and Seagate usually corrects the warranty expiration date without issue.
However, after supplying the info on this new Exos X20 “Shipped and sold by Newegg”,Seagate support informed me that my drive is OEM and doesn’t have a Seagate warranty.
I’m already 18+ hours into a full parity sync on this drive - but definitley am concerned about having no warranty on what is supposed to be a brand new HDD.
What would you do in this situation?
Excuse my blatant asking but is there any consumer protection in US and CA?

This actually pretty old law served me well as 14d are usually enough to test a drive quite thoroughly (including badblocks).
Got 3 of these fail in a row (3 separate orders too) a few months back. Personally I’d abort and get a refund.
Why do you people keep buying OEM drives and expect them to be exactly the same as retail drives?

Just chatted with Seagate on my X20 purchased during the sale. They extended it to 5yr without issue.
I used to manage the Newegg LANfest. Those were the good days of Newegg.
My drive wasn’t OEM but it’s getting really annoying buying hard drives these days just to find out that they are OEM drives even from supposedly reputable companies.
I would try support again. They should give you the warranty. I just did this yesterday with three drives, two from Newegg, and one from B&H. So it’s not just Newegg, it’s seagate. I had to provide serial numbers and picture of invoice. The support rep fixed all three (separate orders each), various amounts of months missing from each (one was only 1 month and he still fixed it). In my case the website updated instantly once the rep told me it was done. I don’t see anything on my invoices that says oem or not, two exos and one iron wolf pro drive. My support rep was Kenneth if that helps? He was great and it didn’t take long, did it all via chat.
Unfortunately I think it’s just going to be standard practice for me to check each new drive and have seagate fix it. Seagate needs to set up some system that triggers when a drive is sold to the start the warranty, and it needs to be available for all resellers, because it’s not just Newegg.
Happened same to me too. Was talking to seagate representative to increase the warranty and he told me it’s oem
That’s exactly what happened to me. Do you have someone higher up looking into it? I was told by Seagate that Newegg is one of their trusted sellers this should not happen. Seagate assured me they will get back to me. Whether that happens is still a mystery.
A clusterfuck with Seagate support? Say it ain’t so 🙄

Same here. I ordered some KN95 masks during the pandemic that came with a fake certification from ICR Polska (ICR Polska is legit; the manufacturer faked the cert). Since it was “sold by Newegg” and not some third-party seller, I thought it was pretty reasonable for me to ask for a refund.
Newegg told me to pound sand.
Then American Express told Newegg to pound sand.
That was the last time I ordered from them.
So I bought 3 drives from that sale too. Mine have 4 year warranties and are missing a year. Newegg told me to talk to seagate and provide proof of purchase to get the date extended. I was going to do that today.

I purchased one drive and had pretty much the same experience. Newegg did a decent job packaging it, but it was a bare drive in a sealed anti-static bag. The warranty was one year short, but after chatting with Seagate and providing a screen shot of my invoice, they updated my warranty to the full 5 years and it was visible on the warranty checker right away.
I would definitely contact seller for that. Warranty is one of the things why you get the new drive, at least that is critical to me. Return the drive if they would refuse to provide you with the warranty.
The Exos drives are OEM sold in batch. So that is why they are so comparatively cheap. Warranty is provided by the retailer. Had same issue with my X18 when I went to check warranty.
That would normally be fine if it were Server Part Deals, who is familiar with drives and honors their own in-house warranty. Newegg won’t return a drive after their return period. This drive is sold and shipped by Newegg and is sold with 5 year manufacturer warranty. Not as an OEM drive. There’s no excuse for it.
I quit dealing with Newegg completely years ago when they were selling Intel CPU’s that were a slug of zinc and were refusing returns on them, even though the problem was known and widespread. I had to do a CC chargeback to get my money refunded.

I bought 16 of the Exos X20 from Newegg a few weeks ago. I also had the issue of a few months missing from the warranty. I reached out to Seagate support via chat and I provided them with proof of purchase and serial numbers. They corrected the warranty within minutes and I was able to verify the 5 year warranty on the Seagate website. I guess YMMV.
