Because I wanted a thing that isn’t my phone. All it does is play music. No apps, no games, no YouTube, no socials. Nothing but music. And it’s pretty nice.
Didn’t watch, but I assume it’s because some people like to own their music.
That wasn’t really the thesis statement of the piece.
The piece primarily talked about out the listening experience. It’s a focused experience without notifications, listening is more intentional and curated (not controlled by algos), it’s nostalgic, and modding iPods it pretty fun.
Ngl old Apple products were cool as hell back in the day. The iPod classic/nano with the scroll wheel was amazing. And the very first iPhone and iPod touch just blew my mind back in 2007.
My Zune died. I still have a Sansa that works amazingly. Sadly it does not hold much music. I do use my phone though with Musicolet. I never stream, I flac. And crApple products are banned from my realm.
Because fuck Spotify and streaming. And also because the zune isn’t around.
Proxmox Home lab with a NAS, and a jellyfin server. Wireguard to access remotely. Symphonium for android. All local, but now multiple devices can access your library. Added bonus of not needing an apple product.
Damn. That Symphonium seems like a good app. I have Jellyfin but only a few albums to try it out. I used Finamp before which is basic and works ok but this app has way more features. The downside is it’s not free. I don’t mind paying for something but I notice my free trial will finish way before I get a chance to upload new media and give it a proper chance.
Symphonium is great. And it’s a lifetime license for a relatively low fee. I don’t think you will get buyer remorse.
You’re correct. I just noticed I have a 50% voucher for one app so used that and some Google Rewards credits so it’s cost me nothing really. Thanks!
To be fair you don’t necessarily need an Apple iPod, there are plenty of other mp3 players that are on/were on the market before. iPods are just the go-to for most since it’s the most widely recognized. I’m sure you can find a couple basic players at your local dollar store if you prefer to not use an Apple product.
They’ve partially been revitalized in the mainstream again by YouTubers such as Dankpods or Zac Builds making upgraded versions or reviving them for modern use.
There’s still choice out there for other players, but most are sold as smart phones without a cellular antenna, such as the Fiio flagships or the Astell & Kern players. I could even argue an old Android phone with a headphone jack and all other apps removed with ADB could work as a simple player as well.
But the iPod also isn’t around anymore.
You can still hook it up to iTunes though and transfer music though I think.
Personally I just put Linux on it and music runs pretty easily.

I did like my Classic 4th Gen, except gapless playback was introduced with the 5th Gen. Maybe I should finally put Rockbox on mine, try some mods for more space
