Father why have you forsaken me?
My silver is dross, my water is mixed with wine.
My eyes are so full of blood I cannot see.
Sins I have paid for, they are not mine.
You never asked me,
If I wanted to be the Son of God.
Originally written when Sturgill was in Sunday Valley. Sunday Valley released one CD called “To The Wind and On To Heaven” and this was a track on it. When High Top Mountain, Sturgill’s first solo CD, was released he went all-in on his solo career and quit playing songs from his first album. This was one of the songs on “To The Wind…” and it seems he gave it a revisit. The album is pretty scarce, only available second hand pretty much.
“You never asked me if I wanted to be the Son of God”. It’s obviously a Christian themed piece. Despite my atheism I really like this song. It makes me think of Jesus lamenting to God about how he just wants to be anything but what he is. I don’t believe but that’s strong imagery to me.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Sturgill talk.
