The Vatican has blocked discussions over women’s rights at the UN climate summit following a row over gay and transgender issues, sources have told BBC News.

Pope Francis’ representatives have aligned with Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, and Egypt to obstruct a deal which would have provided more support, including financial help, for women at the forefront of climate change, Colombia’s environment minister told the BBC.

Charities including ActionAid said it is crucial a deal is reached as the UN estimates women and girls currently make up 80% of those displaced by climate change.

I know it’ll hit women in additional ways because of intersectionality. But being displaced due to climate change is horrible regardless. Why do we gender the aid for this issue?

I mean, it makes sense to give different assistance in getting back on your feet, for example since women have a harder time in most workplaces. Especially if they’re the primary or sole child carers. But the displacement itself?

Not being disingenuous, just looking for some insight.

It’s called being smart and using data. It’s the same reason you don’t give a box of single use diapers to everyone in a crisis such as refugees from a large fire or flood.

Sorry, I just realized the article is longer than i thought. I mistook an ad intermission for the end. It does go a little bit into it. Not a lot, but enough to puzzle it together. Thanks.
