Posting the update here because most of the users of RDX come from Lemmy community only.
Why?
A lot of users asked for a more polished viewer with more features and users in the EU now can not add web apps to home screen, so I spent some time building an iOS app. You can also save images and videos/gifs from Reddit now. It’s stil completely free (with an optional donate option available), the web app also works.
You can download the app here
Previous posts for context:
let reddit die. don’t view its content. fuck spez.
Still waiting for Twitter to die first. Been waiting for a decade to see Facebook die. I’m not hopeful
Be the change you wish to see in the world. Also, fuck spez.
Unfortunately a lot of good homelab, Networking, security and other niche knowledge is still on reddit.
Technically one could just archive the relevant subs from reddit using an automated crawler and never have to visit the actual website again, both not everybody is self-hosting to that extent. This is for people who haven’t self-hosted yet
Spez can get fucked. Not going to lurk there, but if I do need to ever view any reddit content, the best fuck you way of doing it would be to use a third party app and not see a single ad. So yeah, I’ll give it a try if you release an Android version. Any plans?
Some people have asked about an Android app so maybe I will try to ship it by the end of this month. Thing is, I see thousands of users using the website but feedback/contributions etc are so small I don’t even know what people want. I mean I am not expecting 5 star reviews/donations from every user using it but people don’t even give good/bad feedback. I also don’t want to force tracking because that’s what I myself despise. So there is not way to know what people want unless they use the feedback form and tell me.
I want an android version of this. I will use the feedback form and tell you all about the good and the bad. I’m only one guy though…
In a week.
I am the mouthy broad you love to hate. Make an Android version and I’ll tell you everything I can, using proper vernacular. I’m a frontend developer so I might actually offer helpful feedback.
Android version in a week.
I saw, but don’t feel pressured. Take your time. We’ll still be here.
If the app offers a feedback option through the app itself, I usually use it. But if I have to go into a git for feedback, I usually don’t. Nothing against git, I just don’t ever remember when I’m in front of the computer. [I, too, would enjoy an android app. On fdroid, if at all possible, but playstore is fine, too, if you don’t want to foss your project.]
[Edit]
I would love an android version of this and I will give you feedback on it and donate.
Next week i will post the Android version.
That just takes time. You will start to notice some feedback trickle in and advise you to wait on a lot of it until you see trends so you aren’t appealing to vocal minority with changes. Also, I’ve found putting together a core testing group of people whose opinions you trust is very helpful. Give them early access to new versions and demonstrate an interest in their feedback and they can help with bug finding and feature requests.
Would it be possible for you to have a Lil pop up letting the people who use the app know? Something like, ‘Hey, if there’s anything you like or don’t like about the app PLEASE let me know I’m listening and want to make it better.’ maybe have it be at the top of any new download patchnotes.
In the spirit of offering feedback I disagree, pop-ups are terrible design, super abrasive and make the experience worse no matter when they show up
I don’t mind the way FairEmail does it. There is a pop up the first time its launched after an update, which shows the release notes.
Something like that, one time only, with a link to the Feedback button inside the settings within the app or something would be a good balance.
I usually dislike them as well which is why I suggested it for patch notes. Those might be the only popups I don’t mind cause it let’s me know of all the new cool stuff that the app has.
libreddit is a thing
I sometimes use RDX to check out some small communities on reddit I miss. So first off, thanks! Secondly, is there a way to collapse comments or skip to the next root comment?
Double tap any comment? Guess I should leave this as a tip for new users because a lot of people ask me this.
I feel silly for never trying that before, thank you!
How does this app work given the API costs? How does it manage to not deliver ads?
I ask because, while I’ve currently embargoed myself from Reddit, I’d like to have some details noted so I don’t fall in love with this and then get hurt again.
thanks, im gonna use it for porn
Honestly, that’s the only reasonable use for Reddit anymore.
Well there’s also niche communities with useful info too.
is android planned?
In a week if everything goes right.

I will post about it here or you can subscribe to this mailing list.
How does RDX avoid using the Reddit API? I’ve used it a few times and was impressed on how fast it responded.
It’s read only.
Please Make one for Android
In a week, I will post about it here or you can subscribe to this mailing list.
I blocked Reddit via PiHole and configured Kagi to never show me Reddit results. When I left that cesspit, I spent a week running scripts to ensure all of my nearly 20 years worth of content was overwritten. I’m here because Reddit can DIAF.
Why does using a VPN break it?
That’s a Reddit issue; Reddit has been blocking anyone who is on a VPN but not logged in. Because they want to aggressively track your telemetry data, but a VPN makes that more difficult. So they force VPN users to sign in, so they can still track those users.
OK good to know thank you. I’m located in China, so they block it locally, so I can’t view it from either side, then. (I’m sure there is a way around it somehow)
Reddit’s way around it is simple: Log in. Because if you’re logged in, they can associate all of your traffic with that account, thus making any VPN privacy protections essentially null. But lurking viewers (like the one in this post) will have a more difficult time with that, because it requires actually signing in.
Reddit is aggressively blocking VPNs.
Very neat. I haven’t used Reddit in a year, but I wanted to check out your app out of curiosity. I think I feel much healthier without it being a regular part of my life, but this is an interesting window I could glance through from time to time.
The comment collapse feature seems to work very inconsistently. Where should you be tapping or how in order to collapse a comment thread?
On the comment text? Anywhere works except the edges or where the u/user link is. Double tapping a comment should collapse the comment and the comments in it’s own thread.
I wasn’t double tapping intentionally! That’s the ticket. I was tapping around looking for a collapse trigger and must have occasionally tapped quickly enough to earn a double tap.
Very cool and thanks for making this.
When you tap three dots(…) on the top-right of every comment, a menu opens. It has a collapse option when clicked it displays the exact same information on how to collpase the comment. I added it specifically because people keep asking about how to collapse the comments.
can you view nsfw posts? login? downvote or upvote?
yes, no no.
Can you tag/save posts?
save yes.
Apple reversed the web app decision FYI
Please check the video downloader. It only downloads the video part and skips the audio part. Also is there a way to subscribe by specifying multi Reddit link??
It was by design a GIF downloader(gifs don’t have sound) but works with videos also. Next update I will update it to include the audio too.
No.
Ty. Pls consider the subscribing via multi Reddit link
Can it bypass account requirements?
what account requirement?
NFSW and a few other kind require an account to see
You don’t need an app for that, just replace ‘www’ with ‘old’ in the URL.
there is an nsfw toggle in the app.
Hi op, thanks for making this. My opinions of Reddit aside, this is a neat app.
Is it possible to open a link from Reddit in this app, maybe with a Safari extension? The mobile site is dogshit and, because old reddit threads often provide the most useful solutions, I sometimes find myself struggling against that unusable site.
I’d also suggest having collapsible sub groups separate from subscriptions, like Alien Blue did, since you have an AB reference in the colors. Back then, I liked having that so I could have groups for news, hobbies, etc. But without having to see the whole list. Seeing AB there reminded me of a lot of great features that app had.
Oh you noticed the Alien Blue reference, there is an Antenna reference too :) Thing is apple doesn’t allow everyone to open apps from safari matching a url like Android, you have to manually verify the app on your domain. I will provide a bookmarklet that you can tap and open the url in rdx. I can do the multireddit thing, maybe in next update.
That would be phenomenal, thank you
